A Positive Homemaking Rule for Wives J.R. Miller

Drying Clothes
by Helen Allingham
1848 – 1926

"It may be put down as a positive rule,
whether among the rich or the poor,
whether in a palace or in a cottage,
that the wife who would be happy,
and make her home happy and permanently beautiful,
must work with her hands at the housewifely tasks which the days in turn bring to her."
J.R. Miller
 Home-making

  1. Gee... I really disobeyed this rule today... Ignore the dishes in my sink please. I love the picture!

  2. Hi Heather,
After I posted this homemaking rule, I figured I'd better obey it. After all, my husband gets my blog through his e-mail!!!

So, I went to the hall closet and took everything out. I couldn't believe how much stuff was in there! I sorted, tossed, and put things back in. I almost finished, but I had to stop to go to church. I'll finish tomorrow.

I'm coming to visit your blog now!

    Blessings,
    Laura

  3. Hi Laura I meant to comment on your last post which I really enjoyed. We have a new programme showing on the TV at present showing you how to furnish your home for free from things other people are throwing away. It is amazing and the homes look fantastic for very little money. During WWII Britain had to make do and mend and we have lost a lot of that over the years, hopefully thing are changing and we are returning to that philosophy. Laura I do enjoy your posts as they always give me something to think about.
    Have a wonderful day
    Lots of love

  4. Hi Laura, I liked that quote! We must be about our task, or the home just crumbles and looks so unkempt. I always think of how much better I feel to go to bed in a bed that is already made up.
I wanted to mention that the stuff I was talking about is MINIWAX you can get it at Lowels. It works really well. Just hand sand the rough edges wipe with damp cloth apply stain mixture then wipe off. Let it dry. Do a second coat if it needs it.

  5. Hi Roxy,

Thanks so much. I've been doing some editing work for a friend today. As I've worked, the house has fallen down around me a bit. In about five minutes, after I pop by your blog to say hi, I'll get off the computer and try to make repairs. ~smile~

    Blessings to you!

  6. Hi Dorothy,
    Hello Dorothy,

    I've been enjoying your blog!

That sounds like an intriguing programme.
I've had to use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without for a number of years now. I thank God that I have a do it myself spirit. It makes it easier.

    Blessings to you,
    Laura

  9. Love this quote! Never heard it before, but it is so true. My house was so clean, and then I dragged the Christmas decorations out on Saturday.

Then I had to run some errands, do something for my mom, go to a birthday party, run to the store, etc. When I got home I wanted to "relax," so I did not clean my kitchen as I usual do. So I woke up to a messy kitchen Sunday morning.

Then I was gone most of Sunday and so I was cleaning up my kitchen Sunday night at midnight!!!!

But I will be much happier in the morning, due to the fact that I will be waking up to a clean kitchen. :) Thanks for linking up to "Making Your Home Sing Monday" linky party!

  10. Dear Mom's the Word,

My house is so so right now. I've got to get busy on supper soon, pick up my husband from work, then as soon as we eat, we'll be out the door to the town Christmas parade. Dishes will be happily waiting when I return.

    Have a wonderful evening!

Blessings to you from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,

  11. There was a time when this post would have set my head on fire. I would have typed words of selfishness in all caps. But as I read this now and look at the picture I am thinking, "She's going to feel so good when she gets that laundry done."

    Hahha... Funny how things change.

    1. It is full, Mrs. Chrissy. I haven't finished Home Making yet either. It's a bit idealistic. I wish I could do better.

  14. There is joy in things "faithfully done," isn't there?! I say faithfully, because I'm far from a perfect housekeeper, but do feel satisfaction when I work at it. Thanks for the reminder!

    1. I'm far from perfect, too Donna. I always thought I'd do it all right and well once I was a housewife. But, I have children, I homeschool, and I'm just not as organized and decluttered as I'd like to be.
      Just being real.
