Five Ways to Find Time to Read

  Winter is the best time of year to grab a blanket, a hot cup of something soothing, and settle in with a good book.  Once upon a time, a long time ago, in the land of no children and husband traveling for work, I would do just that after I got home from work.  Then, I would read for hours until bedtime or beyond!  That was a long time ago, over 30!

   Someone once asked me how I found time for reading.  It's a fair question.  After all, I do review a fair number of books.  Here are some of the ways I found time to read with children at home.

~~~Five Ways to Find Time To Read~~~
  1)  My children were required to read an hour a day every day.  Sometimes I read during that hour, also. We homeschooled, and they liked to read. We started with 30 minutes lying down and looking at books when they were very young.
  2)  I often read when the family was busy with a video or some activity that didn't interest me.
  3)  After the kids went to bed.  This one can be dangerous if it's a good book.  It's easy to get caught up in a good story and stay up too late! Use this suggestion cautiously!
  4)  Maybe you have small children or find it difficult to set aside time to read.  I recommend Snatch Reading.  Use your minutes!  Five minutes here, five minutes there, "line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little there a little".  Choose a book and begin.  If you have a few minutes to read a blog post, you have a few minutes to start a book.  Snatch Reading works best if you are reading one book and use a post it note to keep track of which paragraph you're reading.  You can use it for multiple books if you prefer, but your progress is slowed.  Once upon a time, Snatch Reading was the only reading I did.
  5)  "Take a book!"  My children hear that from me every time we go anywhere.
Now, go forth and snatch every moment!
Blessings,
  1. Loved this, Laura :) I, too, enjoy reading, but now being married and having a little boy it's not always easy to squeeze in reading time during the day. I always read while laying in bed at night and often read until 2 or 3 in the morning...not always a good idea. I love the suggestion of having your child read for an hour a day - I am definitely going to remember that one! Have a lovely evening!
  2. Hi Stephanie,
    You're right, 2 or 3 makes us pretty tired the next day. As soon as my children could read, I had them "read" to themselves for 30 minutes a day. This often coincided with quiet time in the afternoon. After they began reading chapter books, they graduated to an hour a day. I also continued to read aloud to them throughout this time. Mind you, we homeschool, so this might be a little harder for families who send their children to school or who are involved in lots of evening activities.
    Enjoy this time of having a little one in your life. You'll miss these days. I'll be over for a visit soon. Have a wonderful week.
  4. I love to read, and teaching children to love books is such a great thing. I started reading the Bible at a young age. My grandmother started me on the Psalms. I still love them and know several by memory.
  5. Hi Sheila,
    Yes, the Bible is the most important book of all. My children also spend 30 minutes a day minimum on Bible, Bible study, and devotional books. "Thy Word have I hid in my heart that I may not sin against thee."
    I'll be over for a visit in just a bit. We're having a read-a-thon at our house tonight, because Daddy is out of town. The children are allowed to stay up and read as long as they'd like. I've been reading, too. I'm taking a 15 minute break.
    Blessings,
  6. Hello Patty,
    I have Balanced by Tricia Goyer in my Kindle right now. I have the Kindle Touch, so I have to use a light. I usually read on my Ipod Kindle app if I'm going to read a Kindle book at night. I hope you find time to read this weekend.
  11. Great ideas! I always read and when my kids were little I would read after they went to bed for sure. Now I'm a Grandma and I read a lot of kids books to my little one besides my own reading! Thanks for linking to TTF!
  13. I have used these ideas also and have tried to instill a love for reading in my children - sometimes it is working a little "too well"! :) Reading is so worth making time for. gentlejoyhomemaker.blogspot.com
  14. You're right Gentlejoy. Reading is a treat for me.
    I was reading The Hero's Lot tonight. I had to put
    it down or stay up for hours longer! It's good- real good.
    It's good to make your acquaintance. I'll be over in just a few minutes to see your blog.
    I sometimes wonder if we homeschool because we love to read or we love to read because we homeschool.
    Nah, I've loved it since I was a child.
  19. I used to read much more than I do know but I always have something handy that I am in the middle of. I think I read more in the summer now if I am out on the porch and the grands are here playing outside, than I do in the winter.
  20. Dear Laura, This was a really good question from Amy, as it is hard to find time to read. But these suggestions were really good ones!
    I find in the evenings I am too tired to read for very long. And I almost always have two books going at once. Today is cold here, Hubby is napping and I should get my book out here and read now!
    Laura, I want to wish you a very
    Wonderful and Happy Valentine's Day this week!
    Blessings to you Always, Roxy
  22. Hi there, I enjoyed reading this because I have just been thinking the exact same thing about how to slot in more reading time to my day. Reading is one of the best things in life and we should never ignore our books and Bible. Thanks.
    Thanks for linking me to this post. You are so thoughtful to think of me. And, to even answer my question! :)
    And, just so you know I read an entire book! It only took me about a month, but I read it!!
    I hope you are doing well. Take Care!
  26. Thank you for this encouragement! I love to read!! I have gotten out of the habit over the last year or so and I really do desire to start up again. I need to look at where I am spending my time and decide what can be cut out (watching tv) and spend that time reading instead. Thank you again.
  28. Hi Laura! Awesome ideas for reading - I am dangerous when I get going, too. I find I'm putting in long hours to finish my book - especially if it is a fiction. Non-fiction devotionals I take my time with, though. My kids are grown and gone - but my work life is more hectic then when the kids were around. Reading is now a guilty pleasure - but my stack of hundreds of books I'm going to get to are surrounding me. Will see how that turns out. Love your blog - visiting from Return to Loveliness! Joy!
    I just wanted to answer your question. Yes, Roxy from Living From Glory To Glory is indeed my mom in law. Isn't she just the sweetest lady?! I am so blessed to have her in my life.
    I have started my second book, yahoo! Thanks for the encouragement!
    Have a great evening!
  33. Thank you for this post, Laura! Making the time to read informative books which enable growth and transformation can be very rewarding and beneficial.
    It's so true that we all find time for the things we enjoy and somehow fit them into our busy schedules (such as a favorite sitcom)...so why not read one edifying book every two weeks (or as you are able)?
  34. With my children all grown up and left home I find myself with plenty of time to read. I usually read for 30-45 mins at lunch time and I got to bed at 9:30 and read for an hours. I can read one book a week this way:))
    I would feel completely lost if I didn't read and I have always found the time, even when the children were small.
  40. Great tips for fitting in time to read! I found your post on Thriving Thursday. I've found it challenging to fit reading in when my son is awake, but naptimes are great. I really like your suggestion of reading 5 minutes here, 5 minutes there!
  43. The amount of comments you already have shows that us Mums really want to read more but find time hard.
    Great ideas! I have been trying to read more, feeding baby is a good time… but I must confess I do find scrolling through a smart phone screen easier while feeding… obviously need more practice:)
    Thank you!
  46. Laura,
    These are all great suggestions!
    I wish I could read a book while others are busy around the house, but I get too easily distracted. :-/
    And for some reason, I can't snatch read. I have always been someone that has to finish a chapter in order to retain what I have read. (Books with shorter chapters work well for me if that is the only time I have to read.)
    I am hopeful, that with my new Kindle, which for some reason I read faster with, I will be able to incorporate more of your wonderful suggestions because reading is such a wonderful past time! :-)
    Thanks for sharing!
  47. Laura,
    I do the same things you mentioned. I am not a video person so I usually read. I love the idea of setting an hour to read for the kids. I couldn't agree with you more on reading a book after bed time. Sometimes this isn't good for me. I get too caught up. :)
  51. I often read in the evening when the family is watching TV if it's a show I am not interested in. I read while I fold laundry; I use the basket to keep my book propped up and dump all the clothes out on the bed beside me. I bring books in my pocket book to sporting games or karate class and read while occasionally looking up and watching what's going on too so I don't miss my child while they're in action.
