"The Attic Was a Lovely Place to Play."

Don't you just love this time of year?

"The attic was a lovely place to play. The large, round, colored pumpkins made beautiful chairs and tables. The red peppers and the onions dangled overhead. The hams and the venison hung in their paper wrappings, and all the bunches of dried herbs, the spicy herbs for cooking and the bitter herbs for medicine, gave the place a dusty-spicy smell.
Often the wind howled outside with a cold and lonesome sound. But in the attic Laura and Mary played house with the squashes and the pumpkins, and everything was snug and cosy."

  3. Hi Laura,

Laura's attic always sounds like such a pleasant place to play. We don't have an attic, but we do have a space above the rafters in our garage that my children have made into a cozy space where they like to play board games and spend the night. It is so cozy that even I like to climb up there and rest. They have hung strings of Christmas lights, which makes it a feel like a holiday all year long.

  5. Good Morning, I loved that book!!
We do not need all the hoopla, but rather a place that is safe and where people love us. We have sometimes too much to enjoy the simplicity!

  7. I understand what you mean, Roxy. We have a lovely autumn rain falling here today. Soft piano music is playing, and the kids are doing their school work. I really love this life. We don't have much of worldly value, but our relationships are of heavenly value.

    Hugs!

  8. Laura what a beautiful excerpt. How in the simplicity of life we are able to play with what is God given and we don't need fancy toys or expensive gifts. I have never read this book, but I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment. Thanks for sharing with us.

  10. Hi Judy,
My kids are teens and we never got through all of them. I want to make it required reading! I'm afraid I might get some groans.

  12. This excerpt from Little House in the Big Woods just made my day! :-)

I think that might actually be my favorite book of the whole series. My top three would have to be Little House on the Prairie, The Long Winter and The Big Woods.

We have a village in our area with old homes and reenacters. Whenever I go up in the attic of those homes, I always think of the Ingalls girls cozy in their loft room.

    Thanks for sharing!

  17. As a child I used to love to climb the stairs to the attic and look through my grandmother's trunk. ;-)

  20. Hi Jes, so good to hear from you!
I'm inspired to go back and read through the books again this winter. Shall I have time? Shall I make time? I don't know, but the memories still warm me.
