My Daybook ~ November 15, 2015

Outside my window... It's gray and a bit dreary and a chilly 55°.

I am thinking... about how nice it was to finally figure out how to make the degree symbol. On my pc, I pressed alt and 0176. When I released the alt key, the ° appeared.

I am thankful that... I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Yesterday, our car was making a funny sound and struggling to start. My husband took it and had the battery tested. The guy said the battery was bad and needed to be replaced. Since we bought it last year at Walmart, we went there. They put in a new battery and charged us $100 plus tax. When we tried to leave, the car wouldn't start at all. They checked and found it wasn't the battery, it was the starter. We didn't need a battery at all! I'm thankful that it happened in their parking lot before we left. Otherwise, we would be out a hundred dollars on a battery we didn't need! They put our old battery back in and pushed the car out into the parking lot. It's still setting there.  A friend rescued us and brought us home. My son took my husband and daughter to work this morning. I don't know how it's going to get fixed, but it must. It's our family's only transportation.

From the kitchen... I'm hoping to get my new Trim Healthy Mama Cookbook any day now and try a few new recipes. Hey Amazon, where is it?

I am wearing... my purple print top and thinking about putting on my purple jacket. It's cold by the window.

I am creating... a calendar of events for our family for December. Because the restaurant is open on Friday and Saturday evenings, and the girls are in a play the second week of December, we won't get to go to many special events. I do hope to go to the Walk Through Bethlehem in Racine, Missouri and to Dr. Carnine's Christmas Choral Concert.

I am going... nowhere until the van is fixed.

I am reading... I am reading Trim Healthy Mama Plan and An Endless Christmas.

I am hoping... to begin implementing the strategies Pearl Barrett and Serene Allison share in the book.

I am learning... about how to separate my fuels so that my body will burn more efficiently.

I am planning... a bit late, but I'm going to start my Christmas plans.

am hearing... nothing but the hum of the computer and refrigerator and the shuffling of my daughter's feet in the kitchen. Sugar cookies coming our way soon.

Around the house...
  • I need to declutter more things to give away.
  • Laundry beckons as it always does.
  • I need to wrap a few gifts.
One of my favorite things...  listening to Christmas music on Spotify or Pandora for free.

A Few Plans for the Rest of the Week...
  • Lots of working at the restaurant
  • Church on Wednesday
  • Homeschool Group on Friday
  • Preparing for my husband's birthday on Friday
  • I'm going to choose something from my Fall Bucket List to do this week.

  1. My husband used to know next to nothing about cars. He learned by fixing our car whenever it would break down. Believe it or not, he used YouTube videos. He'd search the make/model of our car and how to replace the part. Try watching one of those and see if he can't even fix it himself right in the parking lot. Just an idea. It might be simpler than you think. :)

  2. I have a suggestion for your vehicle and this is from my husband. Turn the car on, and listen to what it's doing. Is it clicking or is there just nothing? Whatever it's doing (or lack thereof) put it in a Google search. Once the problem is narrowed down, if it is the starter for instance, search the make/model/year of your car and how to replace the part that is bad. You are looking specifically for YouTube videos. Watch a couple of those.

This is how my husband has been fixing our car for years. He's not a mechanic, and when he started he didn't really know anything about what he was doing at all.

I hope this helps. I know what it is to have a broke down car.

  4. Hello Laura,

I read your post last night, but I got called off the computer before I could write you a comment.

I am sorry to hear about your van. I am praying God's blessings and help for you and your family for transportation and getting the van fixed.

That is a very helpful tip on making the degree symbol. I always need that. Thanks. I know the copyright symbol - © - is made the same way with the numbers 0169.

You mention about working at the restaurant. I am new to your blog, so I not familiar with this. Does your family work at someone's restaurant, or do you own one?

I pray all goes well for you today, dear Laura.

  5. Thank you, Hope. I didn't know about ©. ~smile~ I need to jot some notes and put them by the computer until I memorize them.

My husband called the tow truck this morning to take the van to the mechanic. He didn't want to try to work on it at Walmart. So far, he's been able to get rides to and from work. I'm hoping we'll be able to get the van back today. I'm also hoping it doesn't drain the bank account. ~smile~

Blessings to you and thanks for your concern,
    Laura

  10. I wish you the best on your van repair, but I am very impressed that WalMart would allow you a full refund for the battery. Some places could say it is now a "used" item and refuse to take it back. I'm happy to hear a story of a business treating a customer well! - and very happy that the customer was YOU!

  11. I still haven't read the Trim Healthy Mama book but perhaps one day! It seems to help a lot of women. Thank you for sharing your day with us on the Art of Home-Making Mondays! :)

  12. Hi Judy,
Bless God! It was about $150 to fix it. Insurance will reimburse for the tow. Thanks to God.
