2016... It Came to Pass

Still waiting for our first snowfall of 2016!
Dear Reader,

It's so good to write again to you in this new year, 2016. It sounds like a science fiction date to these fifty year old ears. ~smile~ I remember as a child realizing that I would be 35, gasp 35, at the turn of the century. It sounded so old. Now it sounds young. It's all perspective, isn't it?

Where are you? Does 35 sound old or young? I find myself wondering where the years have gone... then I realize that while I was busy with dishes, laundry, homeschooling, the challenges of living life on one income, helping with the Joplin tornado recovery, and with my husband's business, the children were growing from adorable little toddlers to children to teens and young adults. No one fits on my knees anymore. A kiss and a hug and a prayer and a cup of cocoa don't solve all their problems anymore. What's a mother to do?

Hold onto the memories, but embrace now. It too will be a memory soon. Whether you are potty training, teaching your child to read, or teaching them to drive, the time will go quickly. There are 452 verses in the King James Bible that state, "It came to pass." What does that mean?

Are you having a bad day?
It came to pass.
Are you having a good day?
It came to pass.
Out of work?
It came to pass.
Trouble with...
It came to pass.
Celebrating?
It came to pass.

Get the picture?

Whatever you're doing today, whomever God has given you to love, embrace the now.
Love your husband, love your babies however big they are, love your parents, love your family, love your friends.
Be present in the now and enjoy it,
for it came to pass.

Blessings,
Laura

  1. Laura,

Happy New Year to you too!

Yes, it is so true how fast time goes! When I used to share at Mothers of Preschoolers I would always tell the young moms to cherish these moments because they go by in a flash.

I found so much comfort in the words you shared of all things in life, some that are difficult, but that they will "all come to pass..." Having that perspective helps when going through fiery trials.

And thank you for the reminder to live in the moment. I've really been exercising that of late as a very precious season in my life is drawing to a close.

Always a breath of fresh air to visit you here. Blessings. :-)

  2. We're neighbors on The Art of Homemaking Mondays, so I thought I'd come visit. I love pictures of houses in the snow. Your lovely words reminded me of a time not very long ago when I realized how quickly my kids are growing. I have four years in between my middle children, not by my choice. But I learned a lot in those four years. I thought that my baby years were behind me. I'd finished potty training, we were sleeping through the night, weaned, homeschooling, etc. I was and am so thankful the Lord blessed me with a few more baby years. It makes me hold them a little tighter, because you're right. It passes quickly.

  4. Oh, dear friend! I am in tears! The years...oh, how quickly they fly by! I have often thought of how easy the problems were solved with our sweet boy was little. So thankful we have a BIG God Who never tires of us coming to Him for the problems we do not know how to solve. And the thought you shared about "it came to pass"....I have NEVER thought of that phrase in this way. This is just profound wisdom that I will carry with me from now on. I love the way you brought all of this out. Praying much for you and sending you big hugs.

  5. Happy New Year to you Laura. You can have our snow, if you want (hey, what a minute--I like the snow, give it back, smiling)---I thought 30 was old, then 40, now, I will be 49 in March...and I use to say, "It's only a number"...I am starting to rethink that.

Thank you for your beautiful post. Again, totally relatable.

  8. It does to me, Anne! In a few months, I'll be as old as my momma was— 51! That doesn't even seem possible!

  9. That's the great part of it Annie!
There's a very old middle English poem called "Deor's Lament". It's supposed to be the oldest poem we have in English, if I remember right. It talks of one bad thing happening after another. Each stanza ends with, "That now is gone, this too shall pass." It was a great comfort to me in Shakespeare class all those many years ago! It too passed!
    Blessings,
    Laura

  12. Dear Laura, You are right, it is about perspective... But the days seem long, it is the years that fly right by! I always seem to spend more time thinking about each year that has passed and hopefully filed away the good memories!
I really appreciate you! Still praying for your family!
    Hugs, Roxy

  14. Hi Sarah Jean,

I found your blog just last night. Thanks for "talking back". Do you know that your comments come through to my email as a "no reply blogger"? If you'd like to get direct responses to your comments more often, you might like to know how to change that. I wrote about it in this blog post.

    http://harvestlanecottage.blogspot.com/2015/01/are-you-no-reply-blogger.html

If you're like me, you don't have time to go back and check on other blogs to see if you've gotten a response to your comment. I sometimes can take time to track down commenters, but I'm usually short on time.

Hope to hear again from you,
    Laura

  15. This was such a good post, Laura! It does come to pass, doesn't it? And rather quickly I might add. It seems as though we blink and another week has gone by. I don't have little ones sitting on my knee anymore eitger, but every once in awhile my youngest which is 7 will come snuggle with me in my chair. Oh boy, does that melt my heart.
And my oldest will be 15 next month. Boy, it seems like yesterday he was a baby... I'm so blessed to treasure each moment in my ordinary days. My 3 boys keep me busy and Im thankful they keep me moving....
Praying for you and your family!
    ((Hugs)) my friend!

What a beautiful reminder. I never thought about the "It came to pass" in the bible. Thank you for teaching me something as well as encouraging me. I needed it. Blessings!!!

  17. You are right about that, Roxy. Since we closed the restaurant, my days have seemed very long. I haven't had to go go go like I did before.
Thank you for being my friend,

  18. Sometimes 50 feels old, sometimes it feels middle aged, sometimes it feels young Judy! It's all in my attitude, my energy level, and how I'm feeling. ~smile~

  19. Hi Laura, I am in my late sixties and just the other day I was bringing up little children. Time goes so quickly so we need to appreciate the times we have with our children while we have them in our care. I found it was important to create happy memories and took lots of photos of mine so that they could look back and recount those memories. There are usually lots of laughs when looking at their old photos too.

  21. Laura, thank you for visiting me. And it came to pass that my children grew up and left home, married, had children... and it was hard on me to transition to a new season of life. I'm trying to embrace this new normal.

  22. Happy new year Laura - what a picturesque scene of the snow and house. It is summer here but we have been so blessed with lots of rain and cool weather (whilst sadly other areas are having very hot weather and bush fires).

To be 35 again - I am heading towards the big 50 but even though it sounds old, I still feel so young and I pray that i can keep that feeling of youth for a long time yet. :)))

    Have a wonderful year.

  23. Good morning Laura,

I really like this post. We need to appreciate the good we enjoy today and not worry so much about our troubles.

I am nearly 52, so 35 sounds very young to me :) My last child was born when I was 35.

    Blessings to you,
    ♥Hope

It goes much too quickly. Yet when we're in the middle of it, we're so busy we don't even notice. I hope to savor more moments this year.

  35. Thank you for stopping by and leaving your kind words at Being Woven. I am sorry you and your family have been sick (in current post) but also thankful that our God is healing you each.
Thirty-five...I once thought that was ancient - when I was 16, but now that I am 68, it is so very young. I am grateful that God has given me these years since 35 as my Daddy only lived to 46. Even when I was 12, I thought he was so very young at 46...to die so young. Perspectives and how they affect us gives events and ages a lot of different lights.
    Got me thinking, Laura Lane.
