A Thrifty Week at Harvest Lane Cottage #53

Hello!
It's a bright sunny day in my neck of the woods.
Bah! Humbug!
~smile~
I'm still praying for snow.
Some of you have had way too much.
Could you send a cup or two my way?
I want to make snow ice cream!

~ My husband fixed our bathroom sink himself. He used a wire coat hanger, packing tape, and tools he had on hand instead of buying what he needed. I told him if he could do it without buying anything, he'd make the blog list! He did it! Yay Lowell!

~ I didn't have enough Hershey's cocoa to make a pot of cocoa, so I used a bit of leftover baking chocolate that had been lurking in the cabinet for weeks. It was delicious.

~ I received a new hot glue gun from a company for review.

~ My Emily and I made some Cauliflower soup and substituted ingredients rather than go to the store.

~ My husband took our computer apart, cleaned it, and put in a new CD drive so that my kids can do their math! Their CDs wouldn't load on the old one. This saved us the cost of a computer tech. Thanks Sweetheart!

~ My daughter received a cardigan from a company for review.

~ We carried water bottles instead of buying water while we were out.

~ I organized my fabrics and discarded some that won't be used. That's real estate investment!

~ My husband is still job searching, so I'm trying to really stretch the groceries I have on hand. It's made for a few experiments. ~smile~

~ I used a pound of ground beef to make biscuits and gravy.

~ A friend brought me some big hard rolls that were just out of date. I sliced them and dipped them in an egg, milk, sugar, and cinnamon mixture and fried them in my skillet to make french toast.

~ My daughter is making a large pot of rice for lunch. I have some canned chili sauce left over from the restaurant. I'll offer that as a possible topping. Some will eat it with soy sauce. Some may eat it plain.

~ I made wheat farina for breakfast for the family one day this week. You can buy it as Malto-Meal at the store.

~ The local thrift store is going out of business. I bought two pretty candle holders for $.59.

~ My Amy used some leftover Christmas lights to decorate in the girls' room.

~ My Emily bought a frame with glass at the thrift store to make into a "white board" to put her to do list on.

  2. Hooray for your dear hubby and for you stretching the food budget. Jack and I have been there and had to make do on 80 dollars a month in 2005. Made for a lot of beans to eat.

Sounds like your doing a great job stretching those groceries.
I have had a good week.. We had a house showing and they will return
tomorrow. Realtor said, they are very interests. So, I have been trying
to declutter/clean and get rid of things [donate things'. I also made
kitchen curtains [from my stash] for the other house , we will be moving
    too.
I skipped buying groceries this week, used what we had.[Only bought bread]
Praying your hubby will find a job soon.

  5. We've sold a few houses, Judy. I do recommend that you declutter and give, sell, or box up everything you can. It makes the house more spacious.
I do hope this looker is your buyer!
    Blessings,
    Laura

  8. Laura:

    Always enjoy reading your blogs.

What sort of job is Lowell looking for? Why just this last couple of weeks I have come across places looking for various people. I know one has been filled, but not sure about the other. Hope he finds something soon.

I have been decluttering some. That is a timely thing to do. Take care. Blessings.

  10. Your husband did so great for you this week.
We have only made it pretty well all these years because my husband has done things like this.
Not butting into your business, but if there is a hospital, nursing home, adult day care, prison, job corps or jail nearby, they always seem to need cooks. With your husband's work experience, it might be an opportunity in some type of facility. Just a thought.

  11. Your story about cocoa makes me want to run to the fridge and get myself one. :)
Good on you to find a husband who can fix such problems in the house.

    Have a great week ahead.

  15. Hi Annie,
Thanks for the suggestions. He had a couple of interviews last week. He's filling out applications. Tonight he filled one out for a company that wanted to know how many times he'd used drugs at work and how much it was okay to steal from the company. Crazy!

    Blessings,
    Laura

  17. Ah, Stephanie, don't I wish I were still that beautiful? But, I think I'm probably more beautiful inside than I was when I wed.

  19. Dear Mrs. Sarah,
Thank you so much for reminding me about the lower heating bills. I need something positive to think about the lack of beautiful white stuff.
    Blessings to you!
