A Thrifty Week at Harvest Lane Cottage #69

Welcome to another thrifty week at Harvest Lane Cottage. I am honored by your visit.  Each week I share my thrifty and frugal projects, ways of saving money, and my blessings from God.

I am so glad you dropped in for a visit today—or tonight!
I am not sure exactly where this week went... unless I look at my very full boxes on my calendar. It was a week full of doing for my family. That's not so unusual. Some weeks I just look up, and it's Friday.

I love it when y'all leave comments, so I can meet you and see your blogs, too.

Here's my thrifty week:

~ I wrote some reviews on Amazon in exchange for a few free items... sticky notes, zip ties, an insulated lunch bag, wire brushes and such. Most items that are offered to me are from Amazon sellers who sell small items. I did get an offer for a dress for my daughter this week, but I haven't ordered it yet.

~ We ate primarily from what we on hand for most of the week. We had a big bill for fixing the van's air conditioner last Friday that ate up a lot of the food money from this paycheck.

~ That air conditioner bill was better than a hospital bill for heat exhaustion!

~ We enrolled my daughter, Emily, in the local community college. This is thrifty because her Pell grant will go a lot further than it would at a state university or a private college.

~ We planned Emily's classes on two days of the week. This will reduce the number of trips that I have to make dropping her off and picking her up in the nearby town. I estimate it's probably around 15 miles to the school. I have to be in town on Fridays, so she will have the opportunity to be on campus 3 days a week.

~ My son, Michael, got a summer job that will allow him to save for car and school expenses as well as give him some pocket money.

~ We cooled off in the creek at the edge of our property a couple of times.

That's about it for this week. Not really very frugal, but it's the week I had!

  1. So glad to hear that your daughter is attending a junior college first. I can't say enough positive things about my community college experience so many years ago. Attending a university for 100 and 200 level classes does not guarantee a better education. I received my AS for my local community college then transferred as a junior to UNLV for finish my under grad and stayed for my graduate consequently I had very little student debt. I pray blessings for your daughter as she starts her higher education adventures. Hugs- Tina

    1. Staying out of debt is one major goal. We know people with over $50,000 in college debt and no degree! Can't let that happen.

  2. Yay for summer jobs! It gives young people an education that they can't learn from books. And I'm all about cutting driving time. I remember the days of chauffering my kids around. Every little bit helps. Best of luck to Emily in her new classes!

    1. Thanks Karen. This is the first official summer job that Michael's had. He's worked as a ranch hand and has done lawn care for a couple of years, but nothing official.

  3. That is being frugal...don't sell yourself short, Laura. I commute 11 miles one way via the bus shuttle...(does your town not have anything like that?)I know all to well about having to plan ahead, its costs $96 for the semester. smiles.

    1. Our town is a bedroom community. We don't have a bus system. I think there's something for elderly and disabled people to take them to the doctor, but that's all. So, I'm the shuttle bus. ~smile~ $96 for the semester sounds like a good deal to me.

    1. Heat really bothers me. Even with a/c, I find a cool shower in the evening helps.

    1. It will be a necessity here to use what we have on hand. I'm sure the electric bill will be high this month. It's been so hot, we've been running the a/c almost continuously.

  7. I got a package of marked down hard salami, a rare treat, and 3 marked down apples in a package together, and I got a good price on canning jar lids, pectin, and I got a half price new electric pressure cooker / canner. I have not used it yet, but I hope it was a good investment and not just something else taking up real estate here. I have never used one, and am a bit leery, but took the plunge when I found it still new in a box, at a yard sale.

    1. Fabulous buys Annie! I used a pressure cooker years ago to can some green beans, but I was afraid the whole time.

    2. Hey there, pressure canning can be very scary but so verty worthwhile. Once you get used to it, that is use it a few times, it gets better. Thanks laura for sharing with us. Blessings to you both

    1. I've never refinished furniture. Maybe I'll try that when I have more time on my hands and less time in the van!

  10. As hot as it's been here it would be a killer without air conditioning. That is a must! Cooling off in a creek sound like fun as well as practical. Best of luck to your son and daughter with his job and her schooling! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
    hugs,

  11. I made some new covers for the chaises in the garden. I used a chenille bedspread that I had on my bed when I was a child so it was a freebie.
