A Thrifty Week at Harvest Lane Cottage #74

Welcome to another thrifty week at Harvest Lane Cottage. I am honored by your visit.  Each week I share my thrifty and frugal projects, ways of saving money, and my blessings from God.

I am so glad you dropped in for a visit today—or tonight!

♥♥♥
Well, the big news this week is that we bought a van. We got it yesterday, and I haven't taken any photos yet. It's black and in good condition. The second big news is that my son's new-to-him truck has a lot of problems. It won't pass state inspection until he gets most of them fixed. We won't know until tomorrow what that will cost. Ah well, God will work it all out.

I love it when y'all leave comments, so I can meet you and see your blogs, too.

Here's my thrifty week:

  • My husband and I bought a van. It's a used van, and we bought it from a Mennonite man who has a small car lot east of our town. He gave us a God deal of a price for it. Lowell told him what he needed, and the man found it for him at an auction at the right price. It still has a little bit of warranty left on it, too! Buying a car is never truly thrifty, but this time it was pretty good deal.
  • We ate tomatoes from our garden.
  • A friend brought us some chicken and some romaine lettuce. My refrigerator was pretty bare. I had just cleaned it out when she texted me. Quite a blessing. It made for a late supper, but it was good.
  • Another friend brought lettuce, donuts, and a few other items.
  • I found boneless chicken breasts for $1.69. We ate a terrific Greek salad Thursday that tasted like it was from a fancy restaurant. It's in the Trim Healthy Mama* cookbook. It's called Grand Greek Salad.
  • I bought a set of text and workbooks from Ebay.
  • Another friend brought me a box of breaded chicken ready to be baked or fried.
Well, that doesn't seem like much. I guess I'd better do better next week! I have plans for sewing with fabric I have in my stash. I want to make some nifty personal Kleenex holders that are made by folding and sewing fabric. I don't know if I'll get it done. August 1st is Monday. It's the day I plan to start school with my daughter. I may just have her start math and science. I'm not really ready yet for the other things. My son will start in a couple weeks when he's done with his summer job.

Well, that's my thrifty week.

    1. I need to bake some bread, too. I just haven't wanted to heat the house. I don't have central air.

And fresh veggies from neighbors are such special treats!
We had a friend come this week and cook chicken over a spit for us! It was delicious!
And... We ate it for days! We had chicken dinner, chicken sandwiches, and yesterday I made soup with the bones!
    Have a cozy weekend!

  3. These are inspiring posts! I want to be more thrifty. Congrats on your van. We are starting our new school year at the end of August. This week, my husband took our boys fishing, we celebrated our daughter's 21st birthday and I cleaned five rooms in our house. And my mother-in-law is visiting for the weekend so that's a blessing.

How nice to have such wonderful /caring friends. The salad sounds really good.

I had intended on buying groceries this week, but had plenty veggies in the garden, and had plenty meat in the freezer, so I decided to not go to the store. .I will put this money aside for other needs.. Thus a saving.. I also made zucchini bread . some to eat now, and some for the freezer.

    Have a blessed week.

  5. Oh Laura, I am so excited for you and your family! Your new-to-you van is such a blessing :)

And speaking of blessings, your list of joys and blessings was a delight to read. I love seeing how the Lord provides. Hugs to you!

  6. Yay for the van, I hope it gives you many years of dependable service. Also that your son and his truck have a happy resolution. :)

Things aren't too thrifty around here lately. We just closed on a home/land and are having to fork out for carpet, a/c, paint. We paid to have the yard cut and cleaned today, as Dh is on graveyard, the hauling logistics
involved with our own mower are beyond doable right now.

Got a good price for the work, though. :)
I had a mammogram today in another town, so we ate out. Not so frugal, but dh decided. :)

Once we get the main stuff done at the new house and moved in by Sept, I can hopefully join you in frugality. Happy Summer!

  9. Sounds like a good week, gifts from friends and a van!
Very happy for you about that, and selling some items too!
I have not done much thrifty this week, but I did get some new tennis shoes I needed desperately , I am so very hard on them, they wear out fast!, and I got some tp on sale, and a free drink coupon came in my email.
Hope he gets the truck problems resolved, we love trucks here, wish I had one running right now. I did get my midget muffler repaired this week on the little car, we didn't save much, but at least it got done.

  10. Dear Laura, you received so many blessings this week! I'm so pleased for you. I had a week of diamond days, mixed with a few days that were more like stones. But I did my best to polish those stones brighter so they more closely resembled diamonds. Some weeks are like that, don't you find? Today is definitely a diamond day, so I am thankful. I hope you have a beautiful diamond day too. Much love, Mimi xxx

  11. Laura can you please help me? When we stand before God at judgement do we give account for our entire life or just after we were saved? Will God turn us out for our past sins? . Thank you for answering my questions

    1. Sue dear, I do wish you would contact me if you'd like to "talk". My email is laura of harvest at yahoo dot com. Just put it in the regular format. Now, to your question.

Sue, we have all sinned. We have sinned before we were saved and after we were saved. I honestly do not know exactly how we are going to give an account. The Bible does say that when we repent, and turn away from our sins, He casts our sins are far as the east is from the west. Psalm 103:12

It also mentions that we will give an account of every idle word in Matthew 12:26.

      Here's the bottom Line, Sue.
We are saved by faith in Jesus Christ. We will all be guilty when we stand before God. But God had a plan... Jesus Christ. He shed his blood for our sins— all of them. That is the payment for our transgressions.

Jesus said, “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ We are also to love others as we love ourselves.

We must confess our sins to God, accept His gift of Jesus, have faith that Jesus will save us, and seek Him.

Get to know Jesus through reading the Bible (John is a great place to start), praying, and then listening as the Holy Spirit speaks to us by putting thoughts in our minds that line up with the word of God.

Sue, I encourage you to go to kcm.org. It's Kenneth Copeland Ministries. You will find good, solid, Biblical teaching that will help you with your questions. Check it out. He has lots of free resources.

Confess your sins, turn from them, and trust Jesus Sue for all of your sins, past and current. Jesus is enough. But we must keep making an effort to get to know His Word and His voice better. He loves you more than you can imagine dearie.

Do not fear but have faith and seek Him.

Be blessed, and email me if you'd like to "talk".

~Father God, I pray that you will bring Sue into all truth, that you will lead her in the way she will go, and that you will give her faith in you, your son Jesus, and the Holy Spirit. In Jesus' Name. Amen.~

    1. That's a good idea Lady Locust. My stove top is glass. It broke last fall, and I've been carefully limping along with it. I'm afraid to put the heavy canning pots on it. I can only use two burners safely. I did check with the repairman, and he said I could use it if I am careful not to get liquid in it. They don't make replacement tops anymore. Doin' with what I've got.

Be blessed and enjoy all that wonderful corn!

  17. I'm so pokey, it's almost time for another Frugal Friday and I'm just having time to comment on your last one.
I hope the new to you van is a great vehicle for your family - we've had some great used vehicles over the years.
Our last week has not felt thrifty, our income is all at the first of the month so we pay bills and do most of our shopping at the first of the month. But I know it will all be fine ❤️

Thank you so much for "talking back" to me!

I read all comments and appreciate them.
Please make sure I have your email if you want me to respond or pray for you.

God bless you! This life only works with Jesus. The next life is a continuation of this one—make sure you spend it with Jesus. Jesus is the only way to God the Father!
