A Thrifty Week at Harvest Lane Cottage #76

Welcome to another thrifty week at Harvest Lane Cottage. I am honored by your visit.  Each week I share my thrifty and frugal projects, ways of saving money, and my blessings from God.

I am so glad you dropped in for a visit today—or tonight!

♥♥♥
Hello!

I am just certain that I blinked and summer was gone. I've done many things on my summer bucket list, but I don't think I'm going to get to all of them. My youngest is already finishing up her second week of school. My son will be starting on Monday. My college daughter gets another week. This is the first year that they all are starting at different times.

I've been sneaking in some sewing time this week, but it's my mending basket.

I love it when y'all leave comments, so I can meet you and see your blogs, too.

Here's my thrifty week:
  • I mended some bath towels that were getting ratty. I cut off the ends that looked bad, ran my hands along the edges to get the little pieces of terry cloth off, then used a wide zigzag stitch by machine over the edges. They're a little shorter now, but it saved them from the rag pile.
  • My daughter called the college to make sure her financial aid was in place before purchasing her books. Good thing. They were still doing the paperwork. I don't want to run up any bills before we are sure what her benefits will be.
  • I organized my ten errands in order from one end of town to the other so that I wouldn't have to do any backtracking. Using an insulated freezer bag made it possible to get the few grocery items I needed early in my trip.
  • My Emily used scrapbook paper we didn't need to line the cabinet in the bathroom. It looks so nice.
  • I made an apple crisp using apples that were beginning to get mealy.
  • We borrowed The Magic of Ordinary Days from the library through interlibrary loan.
  • My friend sent me some fabric to make some skirts and dresses. Thank you Michelle! She gets more stitching done than anyone I know. The word prolific comes to mind. She sells her stitchery, too, so be sure to contact her if you need something made up. She has a charming blog where she shows her works in progress, her finished stitchery, and photos of her very adorable cat, Sylvia. Please visit her at Ozarks Sew n' Sews, and tell her hi.
  • One of our front windows fell out this week. Believe it or not, it didn't break! My husband spent less than $10 for little metal pieces and glazing then fixed the window for me. Thrifty since we didn't pay anyone to do it for us!
  • I sold some things on Etsy and on Ebay.
  • I also listed more things on Ebay last night.
Well, that's my thrifty week.

What are you doing in your home this week?

I enjoyed this quote from Mother Theresa this week:

"Spread love everywhere you go:
first of all in your own house.
Give love to your children,
to your wife or husband,
to a next door neighbor...
Let no one ever come to you
without leaving better and happier."

  1. That is crazy about the window! I would have been super shocked for that to happen. Thankful for the thrifty fix!

I love The Magic of Ordinary Days! It was one that I can watch again and again. I know that they use to feature a Hallmark movie on CBS every now and then. I wonder if they still do that? Would be nice for people like me that don't have cable. :)

I will have to check out the blog you mentioned. I plan to dust off the sewing machine as soon as I am finished with the garden and give my home deep clean and a good purge.

    Enjoy your weekend!

    1. I'm glad to have it fixed now. I noticed the other window on the porch is going to need reglazed soon, too. Guess it needs to go on a honey do list!

  2. Not much here...we did go to Walmart and Lowes ---this house didn't have blinds or shades...so I had some extra cash and splurged for some shades for the sitting room and here in the little office area. So blasted hot and trying to keep the house cool down...hubby goes, "Living in a cave now." wink.

Have a beautiful weekend, smiles. (just a little fyi, one can usually check their student account to see when/if their financial aid will be posted. Mine gets posted on the 24th, smiles)

I need to make time to sew, but it's a busy time getting school started and also trying to do a major declutter/clean out. I need to sell stuff and try to get our emergency fund built up.
      Hugs to you!

  4. Hello😍 I need Emily to come to my house and line some dresser drawers with scrapbook paper. My son bought a tall dresser at an estate sale, stored it in our garage and then decided he didn't want it. I cleaned it up and put it in our guest room but I want to line th drawers first. I have some giftwrap but none of it is what I want to use. I got a ton of scrapbook paper at at yard sale last summer. Thanks for the idea, surely some of it will work. But I sure wish Emily could come do it with me.
    Have a good weekend

  5. Sounds like a busy week for you!
Not much thrifty going on here, baby sitting, and many medical appointments, and travel for that, plus car repairs.
I did hang clothes on the line, which is normal, and got a free meal when they had the town festival last week. The market was giving away free smoked sausage dogs, yum, and they had good prices on veggies, so have enjoyed those quite a bit too.
Hoping you continue to sell some things.
I paid $2.27 for an old print of an old man praying, they have been every where for years, called 'Grace' at the thrift store. We already have one, a bit darker, and more scuffed, our DIL gave my husband. Planning on trying to sell one of them this week coming, hoping for a small profit, I never charge too much for things, people need a break. Anyway I did get a nice one with Hope, and the IS. scripture on. Rising on the wings of Eagles, chapter 41. It had an original price on he back of it from an art store for $29.99,. I paid $4.67 for it, it's 16 x 20 mounted on a board, with graphic letters, very nice. I am keeping that one.
And I got a thin denim jacket, and a work tee shirt for $7.24 another day.
    Guess that's about it.
    I enjoyed your post.

    1. Hello Annie,

You've found some terrific bargains. Good for you! Where do you sell things? I have sold on Ebay, Etsy (a little), and a couple things on Craig's List. I'm currently collecting boxes of things to put in a September yard sale (if I get done in time). I look forward to your next blog post dearie!

      God bless you,

    1. Hello Vickie,

In answer to your comment, she is indeed a nice friend. So are you! It seems that my errands tend to pile up. I must go to different places to buy water (our well is not good), milk, groceries, toiletries and cleaning supplies, prescriptions, etc. I think I also went to the post office and picked up my son from work. I tossed my list, so I don't remember now. ~smile~ I hope you have a terrific weekend!

Not much frugal going on here. Still battling the asthma..So, we have been eating out of freezer/pantry and no grocery shopping [so that has helped save some money..]

  8. In northern MI summer months are short, so this time of year I cram as much as I can into these final weeks of summer. Preparing for school and after this year, I'll have one more child left and even though he's a Junior, he has told me he wants to do the entire year with no break and no summer to get it done! Who knows, maybe I'll have TWO graduates next year.
I got some great autumn décor from a neighbor who was going to take it all to resale, before I ran into her at the library and being that my house is still in "stars and stripes" it will give me the nudge I need to prepare for Fall <---my favorite season!

  10. Sounds like a great list of savings. I have spent money these last few weeks with trips to the vet for 2 of the cats - vets charge huge amounts of money, I feel like I am contributing to their new cars and homes!!!! But on the bright side, both cats are now better :)) So saving money to cover those costs

    1. OH my, Joy! You are right! When my little dog was a pup, I asked the nurse (is that the right word?) to look at a little tiny white bump that looked like a pimple on my pup's bum when I dropped my pup off for shots. Well she called the doctor in and they charged an extra $30 or so!

When I picked Penny up, I was in tears, because that was just about all my grocery money. I paid and drove off, but ended up turning around and going back to explain that was my grocery money, and I had no idea that they were going to charge for it. I also told them my husband was going to be upset, and I just wasn't going to come back if they wouldn't help me out. The doctor refunded the extra money. After all—
      it was just a pimple!

  12. Hello Laura,
I too mend towels were the edges have frayed. I actually bind those edges with pretty cotton fabric, just as you would a quilt but just on the the edges that need it.

  14. I always love the challenge you give me to be more frugal in my life.

I've been freshening up the house by making things out of supplies on hand - sewed a pillow and painted a sign, both out of left overs from other projects.

When I shop online, I first go to Ebates and then to the shopping site, usually Amazon because we are Prime members. So, each quarter, I receive a check from Ebates for things I buy on other sites.

You talk about gaining "real estate" in the house. We've been purging so, we gave away a dresser to a friend's daughter who just bought her first home (rare in California for an under 30 young woman), but can't afford to furnish it. I also gave the friend a bookcase. Giving away the dresser made space in the garage for a huge painting we had in the living room (too big for our little house). Steve stored it in the garage and decided to post it on Facebook explaining that it was just too large for our house. He said "make me an offer" and got far more than he expected for the painting. So, we gained space and money!
