A Thrifty Week at Harvest Lane Cottage #78

Welcome to another thrifty week at Harvest Lane Cottage. I am honored by your visit.  Each week I share my thrifty and frugal projects, ways of saving money, and my blessings from God.

I am so glad you dropped in for a visit today—or tonight!

♥♥♥
Hello!
I have enjoyed my blogging break. I will probably post some reviews this week, but I will be back to writing soon. Please come back and see me in September!

Here's my thrifty week:
  • I made homemade soap with a friend. I already had the lye on hand and was able to sell some of it to the other ladies we were teaching, so I made the money that I needed to pay for the other ingredients. The recipe we use is a simple one using lye, coconut oil, vegetable shortening, olive oil and water.
  • I've been reading Courageous, a review book by Dina Sleiman
  • I did my own ironing. The last time I took clothes to the cleaners, it was nearly $10 for a shirt and a pair of dry clean only slacks. I rarely use the cleaners, but for those two items it's a must. I do my own ironing—I just wanted credit for it this week. ~grin~
  • Hubby traded his Ipad, that we used at the restaurant, for a used laptop, for his current job, at the computer store. That was a blessing!
  • We received a large gift of chicken for the freezer.
  • I made a soup with leftover frozen hamburgers from a cookout a couple weeks ago. It was a fail since it tasted like charcoal. But hey—I tried!
  • My Emily received a bag of hand me over clothes. There were a few items she liked, and the rest are taking up real estate until I take them to the thrift store.
  • We had a back to school lunch at Sonic when they had their $1 chili dogs and hot dogs.
  • We ate leftovers for lunch.
  • We enjoyed Wendy's $.50 frosties for the family.
  • I received another book for review—The Christmas Angel Project by Melody Carlson. I really like her Christmas books!

Well, that's my thrifty week.

    1. I think I have a turkey left from last year. I enjoy them year round. I must admit, though, that they're not as special as they were when I was a child. We only had them for Christmas and Thanksgiving. Thanks for talking back!

    1. Hey Billie Jo,
It's so good to hear from you. I don't mind ironing as long as there isn't so much to do that it makes my back hurt. ~grin~ I hope your week is blessed.

    1. It was. I never do as much as I'd like, but I guess most folks feel that way. I've got things torn apart tonight to get ready for the bug man tomorrow. I've got ants and s-----s, oh my! Can't even write that word in a comment!

Be blessed friend, I'll drop by for a visit soon. I do hope you're feeling better.

  5. The week for accomplishments, for you!!
As long as it's not too hot outside, I find ironing very therapeutic. The gift of food is always excellent, especially when it's meat you can eliminate from the shopping list!

Canning continues here in the midst of heat and humidity. Our pantries are full and we are sharing with those that have no emergency supplies put up. It makes me happy to do so. I now have 60 hand knitted washcloths done too for gifting. In today's mail I got a package of lovely fabric scraps from a friend in Alabama...that made my heart sing too. All the best to you and yours.....Trudy from Windermere Farm.

    1. Oh how wonderful Trudy! I love how we can all help each other. The ladies I've given knitted or crocheted dishcloths to have loved them. I would like to find some cotton that doesn't get rough after a few washings. Any ideas?
      Blessings,

I use the peaches and cream cotton and have looked at some other name brands but they are far out of my price range. If you come up with any, please let me know too! All the best, Trudy

    3. Thanks Trudy. I use the same. I have tried some that is the Hobby Lobby brand, I Love This Cotton. It stays a little softer and the colors stay a little better.

  7. Eeeeeh Laura, I HATE to iron..[but I do it ..yuck]lol Now, we both feel better that we got to tell we iron.lol
The left over burger soup sounds really good to me, I usually take our leftover grilled burgers and put them in gravy , over mashed potatoes.. We love the charcoal taste??
We did the Sonic 50 cent corn dogs the other day.. Nice.. I picked them up, brought them home and we had chips and drinks from home. Made for a thrifty meal.. and taste good. smile.
    Have a blessed week.

    1. I'm not sure, Judy. The burgers tasted good off the grill, but they just didn't in the soup. Maybe they just didn't go with lentils. It won't stop me from trying again. ~grin~ I try to repurpose meat whenever I can.

      Be blessed,
      Laura

  8. Sounds like you have had a great thrifty week. :)
I enjoy ironing and have since I was a young girl, and the cleaners are crazy with their pricing! I rarely use them any more.
I enjoyed the birds singing as I wrote this, just lovely.

Thank you for your sweet visit today. :)

    Bless you~~

    1. Come on over, Debbie. I have lots of ironing for you to do. ~grin~ I actually took my board, my iron, and a basket of clothes to a friend's house to iron once. It made it much more enjoyable. She did her husband's clothes while I did mine.
      Be blessed!

    2. Sounds like another wonderful week! I've been getting ready for hunting, so lots of cooking and baking, packing and loading the camper. I made 2 crock pot's full of pinto beans to make whipped beans to freeze for later meals and boy did they turn our relish!
I hate to iron, so I buy iron free clothing or I ask Roxy to iron for me. ;)
Enjoy your week and have a Happy Labor Day!

    1. You've had a good harvest. Our garden did poorly this year.

I really need to make soap every 3-4 months.

      Thanks for talking back.
