Home Happiness Depends on the Wife

“In the last analysis, home happiness depends on the wife. Her spirit gives the home its atmosphere. Her hands fashion its beauty. Her heart makes its love. And the end is so worthy, so noble, so divine, that no woman who has been called to be a wife, and has listened to the call, should consider any price too great to pay, to be the light, the joy, the blessing, the inspiration of a home.” J.R.R. Miller

It's a heavy burden that Reverend Miller puts upon wives. I've read several things that he has written. Some paint such an ideal picture of a wife, I wonder if perhaps some of his quotes might be discouraging. I think his intention was to encourage women in their high calling. There is truth in his writings, but they can make a woman feel burdened down with perfectionism.

I know I'm not a perfect wife and mother. I'm not a perfect anything. But God, in His infinite mercy, sent the perfect sacrifice for my sins—Jesus Christ His son. Thank you Jesus! Love covers a multitude of sins. That love is God's love for us, for me, for you.

God I pray that you will continue to conform me into the image of your son Jesus, and continue to form me into the wife, mother, friend, and daughter you created me to be. Thank you for giving me a husband that loves me anyway— even with all my imperfections and shortcomings. Thank you Jesus. Amen.

  1. Ah, yes, a high calling indeed. I am always encouraged when I look at the mighty men of the Bible. Mighty in spite of their flaws and sins and struggles. We can only do it through the grace of God. Have a blessed day!

Love how wonderful you made me feel, telling that we are striving to be that wife. mother and friend.Thank you so much.. Have a blessed day.

    1. I think too many of us think that bloggers are perfect. Well, this one isn't. I hope that my transparency will be an encouragement to other moms who are just putting one foot in front of the other and trying to love their families, their homes and most importantly Jesus.

  6. I so agree - 99% of the time, the mother sets the tone of the home by her attitude.

When mama ain't happy, ain't nobody happy 😂😄

  7. None of us are perfect. All we can do is our best. I do believe that our goal should be to make our homes a warm and welcoming place, not only for our family, but for others as well.

    Be blessed!

  8. Sometimes there is a lot of expectations put on the mother of the home. I say do our best and rely on God. But I must admit that there is some truth to the saying, "nobodies happy if mama ain't happy". Thanks for sharing with SYC.

  9. Thank you for acknowledging that sometimes what is meant to be "encouraging" can actually be the opposite. It helps to have someone whose parenting or marriage or commitments you admire, be a real person with flaws. It helps to know that everyone has struggles sometimes.thank you!

  10. Amen! I think it definitely can be a struggle and yet God knows exactly what our family needs and gives us the people who will not only be watching us, but are helping us to grow as well. My attitude does help my family, but it is a constant prayer because I can get thrown off at times so easily. Thank you for your post!

  11. Beautiful and so true Laura! It can be too heavy a burden when one doesn't have the Everlasting One to lean on. We are imperfect but with His strength, we do our best. Thank you for sharing this.

  12. I don't think I could ever achieve his idea of perfection, but I will always remember his words and rethink my attitude when I get down.
