A Thrifty Week at Harvest Lane Cottage #94

Welcome to another thrifty week at Harvest Lane Cottage. I am glad you've found me! Each week I share my thrifty and frugal projects, ways of saving money, and my blessings from God.

A Thrifty Week at Harvest Lane Cottage

I am so glad you dropped in for a visit today—or tonight!

♥♥♥
Hey Y'all!
It's been a spring-like week here in southern Missouri. Seventies and eighties all week! I've seen crocus, daffodils, trees budding, and a tulip tree in full bloom! Folks around here are saying it's spring, but I remember well over a foot of snow in March! I remember it snowed once in May! It's Missouri. Anything can happen. But... No More Tornadoes! Joplin was enough.

Mark 11:24

Therefore I say unto you,
What things soever ye desire, when ye pray,
believe that ye receive themand ye shall have them.
King James Version (KJV)

Here's my thrifty week or two!

Just for the record...I hate all the I, I, I, but I haven't figured out how to write the list without it. ~smile~
  • I enjoyed reading a book for review—The Elusive Miss Ellison by Carolyn Miller.
  • I cooked fried chicken thighs for dinner. The package was marked $1 off, so I only paid $2.27. There were six thighs for my family of five. Yes. We would all have liked a second piece of chicken, but with veggies, it was an adequate meal. Sometimes we can save by simply limiting our meat portions.
  • I bought antiperspirant, shampoo, conditioner, and toothpaste at the dollar store.
  • I put orange peels in vinegar to make cleaner.
  • My husband went shopping at a discount store. He bought a really nice, $46 dress shirt for $2.99! He also bought a $279 black suit jacket for $27.90!!! His thriftiness far outweighed mine!
  • I made a new dish for dinner this week. It was thrifty since I used free gift chicken from the freezer and my husband made the seasoning from spices on hand.
  • A friend sent me a couple boxes of books. I kept some and gave some to a friend. Thanks Karla.
  • I altered a blouse my husband bought for me.
  • About four cubic feet feet of real estate cleared. I took some things to the local shelter

Well, that's my thrifty week.

  2. Hello, I'm visiting for the first time! Something you said really caught my eye..I I I ...(I) feel the same way. Seems like everything said starts with I. Don't know how to get around it, if you ever figure it out please share. Hubby and I love going to thrift stores, so many treasures can be found. I really enjoyed visiting with you today and look forward to stopping by again.

    1. Oh Mary, do come back! It sounds like we've got some things in common. Thrift stores are love/hate for me. If they are clean and organized, I like them. If not, I will just pass them by. Messy ones make me nervous...the clutter I guess. I noticed in your profile that we're sisters in Jesus, too. What more can we ask in common?
      Blessings,
      Laura

  3. I still haven't mended, but I certainly need to! Maybe this weekend as the warm weather is being pushed out. We even have a chance for snow flurries Saturday. I have capri pants on and windows open today. Just weird!

    Have a great weekend!

      Enjoy!

  4. Great week. I don't mind the "I's" but "I" HeHe think you could just do the bullet points is fine.
The inclusion (trying not to say "I") of the links for your recipes is great. That's how I found your pantry salsa. I want to try those Cowboy beans you mentioned.
Looks like you've had a great thrifty and frugal week. Thanks for sharing. You inspire.

      * enjoyed your response. * like it when folks include links, too. * enjoy the beans a lot. They really go a long way, especially if you serve them with brown rice or cornbread. Try the Spicy Bean Soup, too. It's delicious and low-cost, too.

  5. Hello!
Would you believe we have robins in our yard???
But like you, I know we have had some of our worst storms in March.
    I love chicken thighs!
My mom used to cook them and put them in her spaghetti sauce to simmer.
Have a cozy weekend, my friend.

    1. Robins? Already? Oh my! I just noticed that our mums are beginning to push up through the leaves. We have had some bad storms in March, too. I've forgotten...what area do you live in? I'm in southwest Missouri. Still waiting for snow here even though spring seems to be doing its best. ~smile~
Have a cozy weekend yourself. No big plans at our house. Yay! Maybe I'll catch up on some laundry and some reading.
      Enjoy,
      Laura

  6. Are you watching me?! I was mending this morning!! I repaired 2 items and the basket is empty!

It's winter again in Kansas. Sheesh, this crazy weather is going to give me whiplash!! The heater has been running a lot and it's only set for 65.

I'm glad it's Friday. I'm always happy to have the hubs home with me for a couple of days.

I'm spending this afternoon down in my craft room. I need to make a gift for a friend's bday next week. I'm painting her a frame from IKEA (3/$1!) with a white base and spring green (her fave color) crackle over it. I'll glue on half flower pots and put some dried flowers in them on each side. Total cost is less than 75 cents.
    Shhhh.... :)

UPS man came up the street. He never stops at my house! Maybe because I rarely buy anything lol?! The people next door should have Amazon stock!!

    Have a good weekend!

    1. EMPTY? Woo Hoo! That's fabulous!
Oh, winter, please pass some snow!
Your craft sounds neat. What a price!
      Go girl!
You make me smile. The UPS man comes here sometimes because of my reviewing. Our neighbor shares a driveway with us. UPS used to take all my packages to the neighbor's house. His is a lot bigger and fancier than our humble cottage. ~grin~ We were home a few times and went out to get the packages, so he's learned now.

      Blessings,
      Laura

  7. Hello Laura, your thrifty week is one of my favorite posts. This week I gave up my $1.06 cappuccinos and didn't even miss them. I usually have 3-4 a week as a treat. Instead I am having a cup of coffee in my favorite cup in the afternoons. I also budgeted $20 for a shopping trip to Springfield and came in at $13. Thank you for the thrifty ideas! and inspiration!

    1. Oh Dazeez, that's awesome! You're making progress. You're the first to know—someone is giving me a stove. I've been using mine for about 15 months with a broken glass top. I've waited patiently and thanked God for my new stove. I knew he would provide a new one when I needed it! Praise God!

      Have a terrific weekend!

  11. I have been in bed all week---sick with the crud...anyways...I noticed a tote/box here in the corner starting to get filled...and I asked hubby what was this about and he said, "This is your dorm box. Things your going to need." He has been so thoughtful and putting things in a box like sheets, a comforter and so on...so, that's my thrifty week, wink.

    1. I am so sorry you've been ill, Linda.

Father God, I ask for a complete and full recovery for Linda.
Jesus, you were tortured at the whipping post for our healing and
murdered for our sins. I appropriate your blood Jesus for the healing
of Linda's body and strengthening of her husband's so that he won't get sick.
      Thank you Lord!

Your husband is very thoughtful. I'm glad you have him.
      Hugs,
      Laura

  12. Hello Laura,

Your hubby sure found some great discounts this week. While you talk of the nice weather you all are having in Missouri, I'm, sitting in my office listening to ice sickles fall off the eaves of the house. My chicken are out of their coop soaking in all that glorious snow and ice melting sunshine.

    Blessings,
    Mrs.B

  13. It is always a pleasure to read what you are doing. There is always something that gives me some ideas about what I want to plan on doing.

I'm here near St.Louis, and last Thursday morning right before dawn I heard the robins doing their sing song spring time calls. Spring must be here, at least the robins think so. I always look forward to hearing them again each spring. We are having cold here again last night and today (Saturday). I hope the robins have plenty of feathers to puff themselves warm with to keep warm!

    1. Hi Susie! I'll be coming up to St. Louis in a few weeks. I was hoping I might see a little winter. Then again, a little spring would be nice for the day we go to the zoo. ~smile~ I hope you're having a lovely weekend. Thanks so much for dropping by and saying hello. You honor me. God bless you!

  14. Not very thrifty this week. I felt better two days, and was able to go to the monthly church potluck, it was very nice esp. considering I've missed the last two Sunday mornings due to illness. Anyway I cleaned up at ,y son's house and caught his germies back. I think that is where they came from in the first place. So not feeling very well again.
I was able to use two $5.00 coupons toward a new car seat for our grand baby. He has grown so much, he had to have a new one.
I also used s couple of food coupons, buy one get one.
    I hung the laundry out.
And I pulled leftover cooked taco meat out of the freezer, added some pepperoni and made two big homemade pizzas. The combination actually worked, and I couldn't taste the taco flavoring, with the Italian seasoning, and tomato sauce.
    Guess that's about it.
My son was given some free used cinderblocks to add to his foundation on his old house. Always a work in progress for him, and us, we do so much work there ourselves. 150 of them, they will go back and take down some more from the old foundation there, in the next few days. New ones are $1.68 each here.
Hoping to feel better again soon.

    1. Wow the cinder blocks are a real blessing. $1.68 doesn't sound like much, but it sure adds up when you're doing a big project. For that matter, with my budget, a little project, too!

Father God, I pray that you will break this cycle of sickness for Annie and her family. I pray that the germs will just die and leave them alone. I plead the Blood of Jesus over Annie's family for complete healing. I ask it in the Name of Jesus. Amen.

Hugs to you friend, enjoy your Sunday!

    1. It was a disappointing winter, but I've decided to embrace the Spring which is forcing itself upon us. Unfortunately we have already had two large thunderstorm systems go through. I pleaded the blood of Jesus over our area for protection, and it wasn't bad where we are. The Joplin, Mo area has already paid our dues in 2011!
      Be blessed and enjoy!
