REVIEW: Return to Me by Lynn Austin

When Emily, 16, saw this book, she said, "Can I read this?"  When I told her I had to read it first, she said, "I've got second dibs on it!" So began our experience with Return to Me by Lynn Austin.

Oh this is so good.  I really enjoy historical fiction.  This is Biblical historical fiction set in the time of Daniel and the return to Jerusalem from Babylon.  Some readers don't like historical fiction.  They think it muddies their view of history or the Bible.  For me, it opens the Word up.  It makes me think about the Biblical account in a different way.

If you're like me, when you read stories in the Old Testament, you tend to read words in the same way each time.  Truthfully, I don't have enough background in the ways of life back then to really flesh a story out in my mind.  That's where Lynn Austin has done the work for me in Return to Me.  She's done the research, painted the setting, the customs, the characters in such a way that she has brought the story of Iddo, Zechariah, and the return to Jerusalem to life for me.  Customs that I didn't understand are more clear.  The animosity between the Samaritans and the Jews are more clear to me.

I know that it didn't happen exactly as she wrote, but, this story has given me new insight to a possible scenario.  God's truth is woven throughout the book.  The wonder that Isaiah must have had as God began to speak through him is captured.  The fear, frustration, and tendencies of the people to compromise are all captured.  This is a well-written book.  Not only is Emily waiting to read it, I think my son, Michael 14, will enjoy it as well.  He loves history, but the key factor is that the main characters are men.  This is a book worthy of your time.  It's a great fireside book, but beware.  I stayed up too late to read it. ~smile~

May the Lord God of Heaven, Our Creator, His Son Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit give you peace, rest, hope, provision, and salvation.

Blessed to be a Blessing
Happy at Home

About the book: From the Acclaimed Author of Chronicles of the Kings

After decades of exile, the prophesies are coming true---King Cyrus has declared the Jews may return to Jerusalem. Iddo, a priest, is sure this is a sign of God's renewed favor. For too long they've remained in Babylon, and many, including Iddo's sons, are losing the faith that sets them apart. And so only a few choose to leave everything to return---return to their home and their God.

Nothing about their journey to the Promised Land is easy. As hardships mount, even the faithful, like Iddo's beloved wife, Dinah, question the sacrifice of following God's leading. Zechariah, Iddo's oldest grandson, feels torn between his grandfather's ancient beliefs and the family they left behind. But one life-changing encounter with the Holy One gives him insight that will change Zechariah---and history---forever.

Bringing the Old Testament to vibrant life, Return to Me tells the compelling story of two men living by faith in the midst of doubt, the women who love them, and the faithful remnant struggling to rebuild their lives in obedience to the God who beckons them home.
