A Little House Heritage

4th grade

Mrs. Pamela Higgs read Little House on The Prairie to our class. Thus began my love of Little House books. After that, I saved my allowance and any other money I could scrounge or earn (remember selling pop bottles?) to get the next book. I read them all and wished for more. I still have them all.

That was 45 years ago! I've read them countless times since. Little House in The Big Woods remains one of my favorites. I read or listen to it nearly every fall. When I had children, my husband would read to us!

Over the last couple of weeks, I've listened to Little House in the Big Woods and Little House on the Prairie on Scribd. I love being able to listen to books while I knit or work around the house. At only $8.99 a month, I can listen to or read as many ebooks as I'd like.

If you've not yet read Little House in the Big Woods, read it to your children or read it to yourself, but read it. It's so much better than the Little House series that ran on t.v. In fact, there are few similarities other than the names. That was one of the biggest disappointments of my young life. ~smile~

If you've not yet tried Scribd, you can get two free months with my link. As a bonus, when you share Scribd with others, you get a free month for each person who signs up with your link. Win win!

If you'd rather purchase a book, please use my Amazon links below. I'll get a small fee, but you'll pay the same price.

However you choose to partake, please enjoy these wonderful books this fall.

Blessings,
Laura of Harvest Lane Cottage

P.S. You're never too old for good literature.

  1. Every day, toward the end of the day, my sweet first grade teacher would have us all put our heads down on our desks and she would read the Little House books to us. Every one of us in class enjoyed hearing those stories. I think Miss Whalen read all of the different books to us. The TV show could never compare to listening to her voice as she read the books to us through the entire school season. Oak leaves turning color outside, rain and sleet pelting the classroom windows, fresh grass-scented air of early spring, and the classroom stuffiness of that time right before school was out.

1961, a wonderful time to be in school with a wonderful, dear teacher.

  2. We used to read them with our daughters and now our youngest reads them with her daughters. We are thrilled we kept them and that they are still as much loved.

  3. I think I have all her books plus some by other people about her life. I couldn't stand the TV series. When I moved to downsize I had to give away lots of books but these all came with me along with the Miss Read books. These are amongst the few books which I reread. Some years ago I read again the long hard winter while we were snowed in.

    1. I have heard about the Miss Read books. Perhaps I will try to get one to read this winter. Which one do you recommend that I begin with?

The Long Winter would have been perfect when you were snowed in!
A number of years ago we were iced in, and we took advantage of the time for read alouds with papa.
      Blessings,

    2. I would start with village school or Miss Clare remembers. These are from the Fairacre stories. Then there are the ones in the Thrush Green series.

  4. Laura we have read the books as adults. My older sister was a reader ever since she could read. As much as she read every book she could get her hands on, these books were never introduced to her. Like the Little House books, Anne Of Green Gables was also never known until we were adults. The series On TV The Little House ON The prairie was a disappointment.
    HAPPY AUTUMN

    1. Interesting Marion. I didn't hear of Anne of Green Gables until I was an adult, too. Then, I learned of it first through the movie from the '90's (I think). Later I read the book, and I loved the splendid language.
      Happy Autumn!

  5. HOLA LAURA: ME GUSTA MUCHO LA SERIE THE LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE, NO HE LEIDO LOS LIBROS, PERO SE QUE LA SERIE DE TELEVISION, NO REFLEJA DEL TODO LA REALIDAD DEL LIBRO ESCRITO POR LAURA, ALGUNAS COMENTAN QUE NO LES GUSTO LA SERIE, PERO FUE UN EXITO ALLA POR LA DECADA DEL 77 Y 81, ESTABA MUY BIEN EN EL RANKING, CREO QUE MICHAEL LANDON QUIZO MOSTRAR UNA DISTINTA FAMILIA INGALLS, TAL VEZ NO TAN SALVAJE COMO LA ORIGINAL, SABEMOS QUE LOS TEXTOS HABLAN DE QUE EN ESA EPOCA HABIA MUCHA VIOLENCIA, BARBARIE, ABUSOS ECT. PREEFIERO LA FICCION, QUE LA HISTORIA REAL DE LA FAMILIA INGALLS, LANDON DEJO UN LEGADO, RESUCITO VALORES FAMILIARES QUE HOY CASI NO EXISTEN, AMOR FAMILIAR, AMOR A DIOS, RESPETO AL VECINO, GRATITUD EN LAS MALAS EPOCAS, TANTOS TEMAS SE EXPUSIERON EN ESA SERIE, QUE DESPUES DE 40 AÑOS, SON MUY VIGENTES, Y NOS DEJAN UNA GRAN ENSEÑANZA. BENDICIONES HERMANA.

HELLO LAURA: I LIKE THE LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE SERIES A LOT, I HAVE NOT READ THE BOOKS, BUT I KNOW THAT THE TELEVISION SERIES DOES NOT REFLECT AT ALL THE REALITY OF THE BOOK WRITTEN BY LAURA, SOME COMMENT THAT YOU DON'T LIKE THE SERIES, BUT IT WAS A SUCCESS THROUGH THE '77 AND '81 DECADE, I WAS VERY WELL IN THE RANKING, I THINK MICHAEL LANDON WANTED TO SHOW A DIFFERENT INGALLS FAMILY, MAYBE NOT AS WILD AS THE ORIGINAL, WE KNOW THAT THE TEXTS TALK ABOUT THAT IN THAT TIME THERE WAS A LOT OF VIOLENCE, BARBARISM, ECT ABUSES. I BELIEVE THE FICTION, THAT THE REAL HISTORY OF THE INGALLS FAMILY, LANDON LEFT A LEGACY, RESURRECTED FAMILY VALUES THAT ALMOST DO NOT EXIST TODAY, FAMILY LOVE, LOVE TO GOD, RESPECT TO THE NEIGHBOR, GRATITUDE IN THE BAD TIMES, THERE IS SO MANY FEARS IN THOSE SERIES, WHICH AFTER 40 YEARS, ARE VERY CURRENT, AND LEAVE US A GREAT TEACHING. BLESSINGS SISTER.

    2. Haces un buen punto. Había algunos buenos valores familiares. Fue una serie duradera.

He leído todos los libros de Little House. No vi ninguna barbarie y muy poca violencia. Fueron escritos para niños.

      Bendiciones
      Laura

  6. I too absolutely love Little House in the Big Woods too, Laura. It was a childhood favorite for me, along with Anne of Green Gables. Something so very special about those volumes that speak to the heart no matter how many times you've read them! Trust that you are doing well, and enjoying beautiful fall weather there. Our Fall weather here has been really nice. Many blessings to you :)

  7. Thanks Teri.
I'm listening to On the Banks of Plum Creek now. I skipped Farmer Boy. I want to talk my husband into listening to that one with me. He liked it years ago when we read it aloud to our children.
    Blessings,
    Laura
