A Ringing Phone and a Clicking Keyboard

I enjoyed my homemaking Saturday.  I went to a few garage sales, made enchiladas, froze corn, and baked homemade bread.  Here's how it went....

Morning was announced by the ringing of the phone. We have a very old, very loud phone.  I found this old-fashioned dial phone a few weeks ago at a yard sale.  Since my answering machine isn't hooked up, it rang and rang and rang until I woke up enough to go to the living room and answer it this morning.  It was my mother-in-law checking in.  ~smile~
My Amy had a birthday party to attend at 10:00.  We dropped her off, visited with the parents for a few minutes, and headed out garage saling with our sons.  My husband found this soup tureen for $5.00.  I offered $3.00 and took it home.  I'm learning to bargain. ~smile~
After a sandwich lunch, I relaxed for awhile and read a couple chapters of The Letters.  I'll be reviewing it next month.  It's about an Amish widow who decides to open their home as a bed and breakfast.  I like the way the story is told from the viewpoint of several characters.

Next up, blanching and freezing corn.  Lowell took me shopping at a discount grocery store yesterday.  I bought 40 ears of Peaches and Cream sweet corn for ten cents an ear.  Today I blanched and froze it.  Of course we ate some for supper with our baked chicken and $1 watermelon.
While the corn was blanching, I put together two Enchilada Casseroles for tomorrow.  I'll take one to a friend who had surgery a few days ago.
I mixed up a big batch of bread dough just before dinner and let it rise while we were eating.  Three loaves of white bread will go to church with me tomorrow.  There's a bake sale to raise money for my little girl's Bible study class.  I had an hour or so of dishes and clean-up during which I listened to some Psalms and Proverbs.
A bedtime snack with real butter.  These rolls will complete our enchilada meal Sunday.

My day began with an old-fashioned ringing phone and ended with a new-fangled keyboard sending my thoughts around the world.  It was a full day.

Blessings from Harvest Lane Cottage,
Laura

  1. Oh, what a pleasure to read of your productive day! It is a joy to use our gifts and energies to bless those around us! I, too, love to listen to the Word as I work. A nice byproduct is that our family gets to see us mentor that :) Blessings, Laura :)

  5. Well Laura, it looks like you had an amazing Saturday. I love baking bread and preparing meals for the week. I hope you do well at your bake sale. Those are always so much fun. Does your corn turn mushy once it's been frozen?
I hope you have a great week!
    Blessings,
    Amy

  6. Loved reading about your productive day! I know some day soon I'll get to have one of those too, but for now, I'm just enjoying spending time with my Sweetie Girl and keeping the house at least hygienic and within safety regulations. LOL PS If we were neighbors, I'd be over to borrow your soup tureen about once a week. It's gorgeous!!! Great find! :)

  7. Hi Hotcakes,

I didn't say anything about cleaning yesterday. ~smile~ Other than the mountain of dishes and helping with a 100 pick up, I didn't get any housework done. ~smile~

It's 67 degrees as I type. In July. In Missouri. Wow! The rain's falling softly, too. Gotta love it.

I'll be glad to share the soup tureen. Come and get it. ~grin~

    Blessings,

  12. Hi Kim,

I wish every Saturday was that productive. I just had a to do list that had to be done. Sunday was just as busy with places I had to go... church, fill up water bottles, return videos, deliver casserole to a friend, a concert, Bible Study, Dinner out (yay!), pick up daughter from youth group where she testified about her camp experience, go to the dairy store, and finally finally finally home. It was a crazy busy weekend. I couldn't keep that pace up every weekend or every day. I didn't feel like I could relax until I lay my head on my pillow!

I'm coming for a visit to your blog later today!

    Blessings

  13. Hi Amy,
Fortunately, I didn't have to work the bake sale. The kids did that. I just baked. The bread I made went quickly. Yay! I guess they'll probably ask again. ~smile~

I haven't had any trouble with the corn turning mushy. I put it in boiling water, bring it back to a boil, let it cook for 2 minutes, then plunge it into ice water. After it dries, I wrap each ear in plastic wrap then put it in a freezer bag with more ears.

Blessings to you, thanks for talking back!

  15. Hi Sue,
It's 75 and raining. It reminds me of early Autumn. It's supposed to rain tomorrow. I'm going to make ham and beans and use my new soup pot!

Blessings to you. Thanks for talking back!

  16. Hi Julia,

I think it's probably a new book. I'm a bit too lazy to go into the other room and check on the date. I've never read her writing before. So far, I am really enjoying it. It's a restful book. I like that. One thing I like about the Amish fiction is that I don't have to worry that something inappropriate will be included like bad language or _____.

Thanks so much for talking back! I'll be over for a visit soon. Just think! I'm going to New Zealand!

    God bless you,
    Laura

    Those rolls are beautiful!
Oh, I do like your phone. We keep a very old phone plugged in so we have a phone available during power outages.

  21. Hi hsmominmo,

I hadn't thought about the power outage issue with the phone. I just thought it would be quaint and old-fashioned. You've reminded me of one more reason to follow the ancient paths. ~smile~
