Old Hymns ~ It is Well With My Soul

I do enjoy many of the old hymns. Truth and strength combine with a dignity missing in many of the new songs. Please enjoy this, one of my favorites, sung by Sisters. 

It is Well With My Soul


The song was written in 1873 by Horatio G. Spafford.* It is now in the public domain. The beautiful, inspiring, peace inspiring lyrics were written after all of his four daughters had drowned in a sea collision. You can read more at Share Faith.

A Great Storyteller Teaches American History—Dave Raymond's American History

I really like listening to Dave Raymond teach American history.  He's a gifted storyteller. He explains things from a Christian perspective showing in detail how Christianity influenced American history. He's got incredible insight.  He's unapologetic about sharing that insight into how God worked things together for the good.  He's the kind of guy you'd like to invite to dinner. ~smile~  I just cannot say enough good things about this product.  Best of all, my kids enjoy these lectures.

Each lesson has five days of short lectures, reading assignments, and weekly quizzes.  During the second semester, students will write a research paper. Extensive instructions about choosing a topic, format, how to write it, and how to grade it are included.  Mr. Raymond takes the scary out of it.

My kids used American History I at ages 16 and 14.  They were able to do the work primarily independently.  After the fact, because I had a crazy semester and forgot about it, I realized that I missed one of the neatest activities.  The students were supposed to make an illustrated journal of different parts of American history to go along with the lessons.  It's sort of like a scrapbook of their year.  It encourages them to dig a little deeper into the things that interest them along the way.  Oops!

There are 26 weeks of lessons.  Each week there are five 10-minute lectures, daily tasks, readings, and weekly exams.  The students also keep a year-long journal.  A Student Reader is included on each DVD.  You get everything you need for one year of high school History credit.

Each Day Had Its Own Proper Work

Have you been influenced by a teacher?  Pamela Higgs was my 4th and 5th grade teacher at McCarter Elementary in Topeka, Kansas.  It was right around the time of the American Bicentennial.  

Mrs. Higgs had a love for for children and a love for handcrafts.  She taught our class the basics of macrame, quilling, embroidery, hand sewing, and other crafts.  She also brought in people to demonstrate old-time crafts such as making butter, quilting, and spinning.  

My love of reading was encouraged as she read to us after lunch every day.  I remember Charlotte's Web, The Mouse and the Motorcycle, and Ralph S. Mouse among others.  We'd lie our heads down on our desks while we listened to her soothing reading voice.  When she read Little House on the Prairie, a passion for Little House books, pioneer stories, old-time crafts, cooking, baking, and making things myself was born.   I saved my money and bought and read the Little House books over and over.  My favorite is still Little House in the Big Woods.  I love the descriptions of daily life.

That's been almost forty years ago now.  I still remember Mrs. Higgs fondly because her influence, along with the books of my childhood heroine, Laura Ingalls Wilder, strongly influenced who I am today.  

Each afternoon, as I left for home, I'd give her a peck on the cheek.  I loved her.  I still love her for what she did for me.  If I could, I'd give her a peck on the cheek today and say,  "Thank you, Mrs. Higgs.  Your love and influence changed my life."

Labor Day Defined


Labor Day is a day when your mother-in-law, your brother-in-law, your sister-in-law, your niece, and two of your nephews come to visit you.  They watch you closely every time you have a twinge or Braxton Hicks contraction; because,  you were due on August 30th.  All day long you are under the scrutiny   watchful eyes of your family...sixteen eyes to be exact.  Labor Day ends with no labor in sight and is followed by another week and a half of non-labor days.  Finally, two weeks after your due date, the doctor takes pity on you and induces labor.  A certain little miss refuses to come out because it's warmer inside.  This results in a 9/12 rather than 9/11 birthday.

Yarn Along...Still

Joy of joys.  We read about Ghengis Khan, his grandson, Kublai Khan, and their Mongol hordes this morning.  I think those guys could have benefited from a hot bath, a good book, and a good hobby...maybe knitting?  I can smile now; but, those guys killed their way from the China coast to the Islamic lands.  You joined them or were killed.  Not much of a choice.  I asked my kids if they thought they'd be strong enough to stand if it were Christians that were being killed.  They didn't know.  I don't think I would be strong enough.  But I know that Christ in me would be.  Thank God that we don't have to live or die in our own power. 
Holy Spirit power is available to all those who believe on the Name of Jesus Christ and are saved.
