Seven Minutes #8

 Little Joys

Seven minutes of writing stream of conciousness begins now!

What are your little joys? If you think a bit about it. I'm sure there are many. Here are some of mine:

  • Little Paco, my grand puppy. I call him a puppy even though he is full grown at four pounds. He was a rescue from a very bad situation. My son, the policeman, and a colleague each took one of two little dogs that had been treated badly. Paco takes a long time to warm up to one. He shakes badly when he meets someone new; but, once he relaxes, you know you've made a friend. He loves to come visit grammy. Sometimes, he comes and stays for a few days while my son is working or out of town. He's very attached to me. He's definitely a velcro dog—at least to me. How dare I close the bathroom door? Sleep without him, that's grounds for crying. It's such a pitiful cry, too. Paco is one of my little joys.
  • The ice and cold water machine at work. It makes that little pellet ice. Oh, I love having as much ice water as I desire available all the time. It's truly a luxury and a blessing.
  • Fresh tomatoes are finally coming from our garden. It's been the best year for tomatoes and flowers that we've had in a long time.
  • Friends that I can call or text just because.
  • Dove chocolates are rich and creamy.
  • Listening to birds sing
  • Cool breezes
Time's up!

What are some of your little joys?

Enjoy your weekend!

I also included some of the things my four kids did with an abundance of time, no video games or tv, and limited videos. My daughters, Emily and Amy, then added their ideas as well. My daughter, when she was 18, added the following:

"And above all, give your kids freedom in their play. A lot of amazing childhood memories are made by kids using their imaginations and parents being loving and being supportive! Have fun with your kids, but let them also go and act like pioneers together, or build a fort with random things they find. This builds so much character, forms those memories (and isn't that what we want to do for our kids? Help them create wonderful memories?), and teaches them lots of good lessons. To learn, and be healthy, kids need to do things by themselves (and this can be with help). In doing so, they learn, and also learn independence, knowledge, and ultimately maturity, and sometimes wisdom (even from learning a hard way at times)."

Enjoy this time with your children and teens. You may never have this much time together again. Make it count for good.

I'm now a grandma to one little boy. Oh how he's brightened my world. This list is for grandparents, too. We need to share the joys of our simpler childhood with our littles and not so littles. In it, we'll relive our joys, and enjoy a new level of joy with them.

So, which of these things have you done? What have I forgotten or missed? I cannot wait to hear your thoughts.

Hugs to you all! Thank you for joining me here at Harvest Lane Cottage.

How to Read a Blog from the Very First Post

Hello dear readers,

Several months ago I decided to read my blog from the very first post back in December of 2007 up to the present.  I've been a bit hit or miss since I've felt poorly sometimes. I finally caught up this week. Have you ever read a blog from the beginning up to the present? If you have your own, I highly recommend it. It is also a great way to glean wisdom and get to know other bloggers.

♥♥♥

How to Read a Blog from the Very First Post

If you'd like to read (or skim) my blog, Harvest Lane Cottage, from the beginning, here's my very first post: A Cozy Christ Centered Christmas.

After reading the post, just click on Newer Post. Read and repeat. After you've read as many posts as you'd like, simply bookmark the next page, and pick up from there next time you'd like to read. I put mine in the bookmarks at the top of my page.

I've read Mrs. White's blog, The Legacy of Home  and Aunt Ruthie's blog, Sugar Pie Farmhouse from the beginning.

I'm currently reading Karen Andreola's blog, Moments With Mother Culture from the first post to the present.  I am also reading Roxy Jones' blog, Living from Glory to Glory

I highly recommend this practice though it takes time and patience. ~smile~

Just a note, I'm feeling a bit better each day. I should be back to writing in another week or two. I don't want to put any pressure on myself. Thanks for being so patient with me!

     Be blessed in Jesus' Name!

Hello everyone,
It's hard to believe a new year is upon us again. 2017 saw an increase in the interaction between my readers and me through comments. Many of you have prayed for me. I've prayed for many of you. Thank you for sticking with me through 2017. I have hopes for a happy and healthy 2018.

As the year is winding down, I'm looking back at some of the stats for my blog.
The top ten clicked on posts showed that a primary interest is in being thrifty, frugal, and saving money. That makes sense, since we all have the challenge of living on a limited income—whether that income is $20,000 a year or $120,000!

Here's the top ten most clicked posts countdown for 2017.

My Christmas Bucket List 2017

Season's Greetings!

Have you made a Christmas bucket list of the fun things you want to do this month? I'm not talking about a regular to do list. This list is for the things that bring you joy!

I've made a slow start this Christmas season. I haven't done much shopping yet, and making, well, it will just have to wait until next year. Still... there are things I just love to do during the Christmas season. Actually, I like to do a lot of them all winter long. We'll see how many things I can fit in around doctor's appointments, tests, and treatments.

The good news is that I'm feeling pretty good, and I'm here to celebrate Christmas with my family. I still have several months of treatments left, but the cancer is in remission.  Thank you God! Glory to God in the highest!

Here are some of the things I'd like to do this month. I've already done some of these things.
  • Write my Christmas bucket list
  • Make or buy a tree ornament for each child
  • Sing Christmas carols
  • Put up the tree
  • Gaze into the fire in the woodstove
  • Christmas parade
  • Put lights on the house (Kids took care of it.)
  • Talk to strangers (It's what I do!)
  • Smile and spread good cheer
  • Curl up with a terrific book
  • Tree decorating party with my husband and kids
  • Bake cookies with my adult son
  • Make homemade cranberry wassail
  • Make cocoa

  • Listen to Christmas music
  • Decorate the house
  • Read Christmas books
  • Drink hot apple cider
  • Dip pretzels in white chocolate
  • Gaze into the fire of a candle
  • Sing Christmas carols as I shop
  • Burn fragrant holiday candles
  • Christmas baking ~ working on it!
  • Sip eggnog

  • Coffee with a friend
  • Lunch with a friend
  • Christmas shopping

  • Invite friends for soup and bread ~ I invited two families, both were sick!
  • Bake Snowball Cookies ~ A friend made some for us, so I skipped this.
  • Christmas Eve open house
  • Christmas Day at home

Most importantly, worship Jesus ~ I cannot bring myself to cross this out though I've done it!

Happy Christmas Season!
Laura
Blessed to be a Blessing

A Delightful Day Trip... Old-Fashioned Charm

I'm so glad you've dropped in. My kids are at youth camp this weekend. On a whim, my husband and I drove down to Bentonville, Arkansas, a town about an hour from here. It was a fun new experience. I felt like I'd walked onto a movie set! It had a thriving square downtown with lots of specialty shops, businesses and the Walmart museum. It was beautiful.

The spectacular aspect was that there were people everywhere taking advantage of the nearly 70° weather! They were walking dogs, biking, shopping, sitting on the lawn on the square talking, eating at outside tables at little restaurants— some people even had dogs sitting by their feet at the tables! It was amazing! Everyone I spoke to was so friendly, too.

On a side street, we passed by a doggy bakery. Just imagine! Lowell dropped me off just so I could run inside and see what it was like. They had fresh baked pastries that looked like they were from a posh bakery for humans!

What did I buy? Not a thing! I'm not that kind of girl. ~grin~ I did see a bin of dog biscuits by the pound for $5.98 and a five pound bag of dog food for $49.98. Oh how tempting! Not! I'm a thrifty gal and glad of it. My little dog enjoys pieces of her regular dog food as treats. It was truly fun to see though.

We ended our time in Bentonville with a stop for lunch at one of my favorite places, Chick-fil-A. We enjoyed their chicken nuggets with a variety of sauces. It was a delightful trip.... Now, I need to go buy some dog food!

I would love to hear from you.

F is for Fun.  We had lots of fun at the zoo yesterday.  It was the first time the children had been to the zoo.

G is for Good Friday.  Thank you God that you gave your son Jesus as a sacrifice for our sins.

Five Minute Friday: Tender

It's another 5 Minute Friday over at Gypsy Mama's.
To join in write for just 5 minutes on the topic of the week; click here.

TENDER

Go!

Tender, my first thought is of a juicy, tender steak.  Medium.  Baked potato with butter, sour cream, salt and pepper on the side.  Filet mingon is my favorite.  Around here, the best place I know to go for steak is The Red Onion in Joplin, Missouri.

Oh, Laura, you can't have steak, you're doing the Daniel fast!

Try again!

Tender, hugs and kisses from my sweetheart of 30 years and husband of 25 years, Lowell.  My thoughts are turning to Valentine's Day and how to make it special this year not just for Lowell and I, but for the kids.  I bought some cute little red heart plastic plates a couple of days ago.  I thought they'd look great with salad on them before the main course each evening.  Yes, salad.  I'm planning on serving a lot more salads with our dinners.  They're good for us; and, they help fill tummies, too.

One more minute...
Hmmm...
Tender, Love me tender Love me sweet, Never Let me go.
Guess you know who sang that.

Stop!

God is Inviting Us to View a Spectacular Show in the Heavens!

There is going to be a meteor shower December 13-14!

"December 13, 14 - Geminids Meteor Shower. Considered by many to be the best meteor shower in the heavens, the Geminids are known for producing up to 60 multicolored meteors per hour at their peak. The peak of the shower this year should occur on the night of December 13 and morning of the 14th, although some meteors should be visible from December 6 - 19. Some estimates say there could be as many as 120 meteors an hour visible from dark-sky locations. The radiant point for this shower will be in the constellation Gemini. The Moon will set early in the evening setting the sky up for a spectacular show. Best viewing is usually to the east after midnight."

Go to The Sky for more information and to see a great astronomy calendar of events.  It absolutely amazes me how far in advance they can predict these things!
Amazed at His Glory and Grace,

I Should Have Charged for It!

I bought my one and only bag of candy corn at the after H......... sale.  I opened it, ate three or four pieces, filled my candy bowl, turned around (or so it seemed), and it was empty!  I saved the rest of the bag for Thanksgiving.  I thought.  I decided to snitch a couple last night.  They're gone!  I should have charged for it!
No more candy corn until next year. :(  Oh well, I do enjoy my children....and my husband!

Happy Month of Thanks Living!
Thank someone today!

It Was a Regular Slug Fest!

My little kiddles, Michael and Amy, were inspired to create these cute little creatures after viewing the movie, Flushed Away. They, along with our older daughter, Emily, serenaded us for days with sluggish tunes. Don't you just love the creativity kids bring to life?
