A Little Randomness ~ 1980

I was saved on January 1, 1980 while sitting in my bedroom  watching Jim Bakker of the PTL Club on a little black and white television my grandparents gave me. There was a recovered drug addict on. I recognized later that God had been working on me for awhile. I remember thinking, if God can save a drug addict, maybe he can save me, too. I prayed the sinner's prayer. Jesus did the rest.

Thank you, Jesus.

  • I was a sophomore in high school.
  • Who shot J.R.?
  • Hurricane Allen ~ I was visiting my grandparents in Los Fresnos, Texas. We fled to McAllen and stayed in a huge warehouse type building where my grandparents had a flea market stall. They sold used books. We, along with many other stall owners, camped out on the floors with lots of pillows and blankets. My grandma, grandpa, and preschool cousin were there. I remember that I had to drive one of their cars though the traffic to get there. I was so afraid. God took care of us, but it was one of the strongest hurricanes that had hit in many years.
  • The biggest movie was Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back. Yes. I went to see it. ~smile~ I didn't have my forever boyfriend yet, so I think I went with friends.
  • Some of the Top 40 songs I remember were: Call Me by Blondie, Crazy Little Thing Called Love by Queen, It's Still Rock and Roll to Me by Billy Joel, and September Morn by Neil Diamond. I cannot remember what my favorite was. It's been a few years. ~smile~ On the country scene, Could I Have this Dance by Anne Murray and of course, Workin' 9-5 by Dolly Parton were a couple of favorites. I went back and forth from country to pop, but I never liked hard rock.
  • My family enjoyed watching the Dukes of Hazard. What fun chase scenes.
  • I remember wishing I that a boy would ask me out. It would be fall of 1981 before I met the boy who became the guy who became the man who became the husband I've shared life with for nearly forty years.
What do you remember about 1980? Let's share some memories and help others to remember, too.

Be blessed,
Laura

A Little Randomness ~ 1985

Hi Everyone!

I'm time traveling through my memories. It started as a bit of stream of consciousness writing during a time when I had writer's block. That's been a bit of what July's been like for me this year. So, here are a few of my memories. What do YOU remember about 1985?

Remembrances of 1985:

  • My high school sweetheart, Lowell, proposed to me May 10, 1985. We were driving home from college in Edmund, Oklahoma to our home town of Topeka, Kansas. We stopped to picnic at a roadside rest area on I-35 somewhere in northern Oklahoma. I remember we were sitting at one of the tables with odd cement teepee poles over it. Suddenly, he cried, "Look! A wolf!" While I was looking over the prairie in the distance, he got down on one knee. When I turned back, he asked me to marry him. Of course, I said yes. I was beyond twitterpated!
  • I spent the rest of the year saving money and planning my wedding. We were married the next May.
  • I was so busy with Lowell, work, finishing college, and planning the wedding, I cannot remember much else. ~smile~
  • Ronald Reagan was president.
  • Madonna, Cindi Lauper, and Michael Jackson were on the radio and MTV. Who knew what that would become?
  • I worked at Sears in the jewelry, make-up, and lingerie departments.
  • I was in my senior year studying teaching and English. That fall I took five literature classes. I cannot believe I survived it. Maybe that's why I cannot remember anything else!
So, jog my memory!
What do YOU remember about 1986? I'll bet some of you weren't even born yet! ~smile~

Back to regularly scheduled programming soon,
Laura

A Little Randomness ~ 1976

When I sat down at the computer a few months ago, I had a totally random idea. Randomness isn't anything unusual for my pinball brain. ~smile~ I decided to use a random number generator to give me a year from 1969 (when I have my first few memories) to 2024.

I shared at least one memory from the year and then added in any randomness that came to mind. I've decided to do it again. I found it helped me to get past my writer's block and also gave readers something to spark a memory, or at least something interesting or silly or nostalgic to read. So here we go again!

Random Year:  1976

  • The United States Bicentennial was celebrated all year. In fact, on tv, there were movies, programs and what we'd now call shorts that were inserted between regular programming that told and showed the history of the colonial period and the things that were leading up to the Revolutionary War.
  • I had the same teacher for 4th and 5th grade. Her name was Pamela Higgs. She was the most influential teacher I ever had. In fact, she truly influenced the trajectory of my life. I wrote a blog post about her a few years ago.
  • Mrs. Higgs taught practical skills and crafts from the olden days during our art times. We made butter, learned to embroider, play chess, macrame, and she read Little House in the Prairie and other books to us after lunch. She helped me have a diy spirit.
  • I became dedicated to learning to sew, embroider, crochet, macrame, bake, and cook. Sparkling Sugar Cookies from the Junior Betty Crocker Cookbook was the first recipe that I remember mastering. I'd lost the recipe for years, but I found it written out in my daughter's childhood cookbook.
  • My mom remarried.
  • We lived in town, but the back-to-nature bug had bitten my mom and step-dad. They were making plans behind the scenes to move to acreage outside town.
  • I rode my bike freely in our neighborhood and played at the wet weather creek with my little brother and neighborhood kids. It was nearly always dry. There was a spot where generations of kids had ridden their bikes down one bank and up the next and worn a path. It was at the back of a large field owned by a church. We flew kites there every March. We kids never thought about who owned the property. It was ours. ~grin~
  • I liked making clothes for my Barbie doll, and watching Happy Days! Fonzie was so cool!
That's all I remember right now. What do YOU remember?

Laura
Happy to Remember
