A little Randomness ~ 1978

 1978

In 1978, I was really into pop music.  I recognized nearly all of the Billboard Year-End Hot 100 singles when I looked the list up. ~smile~ I included a countdown video below. Let's just say that music videos have come a long way.  Seeing the costumes they were wearing amused me. I wonder if they ever seemed cool to me. Cool was everything to a 13 year old.

My friends and I were into Tiger Beat. TV was my window to the world back then like it was to a lot of young people. I wasn't riding my bike much anymore, because we moved to the country. We lived on a busy road, no shoulders, and the speed limit was 45. TV, listening to albums, and reading took the place of most of the fun play.

Mork and Mindy was great fun and an introduction to the talents of Robin Williams.

Dallas was already gaining popularity, too.

Please share memories from 1978. Some of you may be too young, but I hope the rest of you will join in!

Be blessed,
Laura

  1. 1978…I was with Amber’s dad then. We were young and carefree. We spent a lot of time at Lake Jacomo…fishing, paddle-boating, and sunbathing on the dock at Sailboat Cove. We went to movies, listened to music, and took disco lessons. I wore tube-tops and overalls and used Sun-In to bleach the highlights in my hair. I was driving a big, ol’, ugly boat of a car…a gold 1969 Oldsmobile Delta 88 and worked at Matco (the bigger version of Mattingly’s) in Blue Springs. 1978…it brings back a lot of good memories! 🩷

    1. Congratulations! What a wonder life you've had together. I remember ABBA. I wanted to be a dancing queen when I got to be 17! But, I never went dancing!
Be blessed, thank you for sharing!

    1. Sandi,

I loved Battlestar Galactica! I'd forgotten about that. This has been so fun since we're remembering different things.

Thank you for remembering with me.

  4. I graduated from high school in May of 1978, Dennis fiished four years in the Air Force and we were married on September 1, 1978. It was a big year for me. :-)
I wore my Mom's wedding dress from when they were married in 1944. I was driving a 1970 Chevy Impala and Dennis had a Kawasaki motorcycle and a 1973 Plymouth Duster. Remember those?
    This was fun!
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  5. Oh 1978. I remember that cover of Tiger Beat magazine. I was a junior in high school but in September of 78, I became a senior. I was in the school choir and we did school performances and performances out in the community. One performance I remember in particular was at a church. I will explain about that in a separate comment.😄
My favorite show back then was Good Times though it wasn't nearly as great after John Amos was fired from the show.

    1. I remember Good Times, too. At the time, it was one of my few exposures to black culture. I just read Amos' views about the shows' inaccuracies.

I lived outside of town and went to school with a lot of rural kids. There was one black girl in our school. Yes. We were good friends.

      Thank you for reminding me.

  6. Okay so about our choir performance which actually now that I recall it was a MLK birthday celebration. We were practicing at school for our processional and I totally remembered our teacher telling us not to be trying to add some dance step otherwise one of the old church ladies would snatch us out of the line. I had already had a fear of old black church ladies no thanks to Aunt Esther on Sanford and Son. And my fear wasn't respect fear it was terror fear.

Anyway the day arrived. Got to school, I was wearing my best pants and top. I was a happy camper. Until one of the snooty girls said to her friend loud enough for me to hear "I wouldn't be putting on pants to wear to church!" Oh how the fear of of the black church came over. So panic stricken me went to my director and she some of the girls helped pin my pants up so they wouldn't show under my choir robe. They were all very sympathetic. Got through the processional, survived the church service and I was ever so happy to get home.

But the next day day one of the girls in my choir class said to me that you're not supposed to wear pants to church. I told her I don't go to church. She said that's embarrassing to say. I'm not embarrassed I told her and went to class.

I can totally laugh about that now because old church mothers ( that's what they are called in the black church) seem to not exist anymore to teach the young women and girls to be godly, modest and chaste women who love the Lord.

What an experience! I remember Aunt Esther now! We watched Sanford and Son all the time!
I do understand about church mothers.
      God bless you girl!
