Winter Decorating at the Cottage

My husband of 29 years recently told me how much he enjoys the way I decorate for fall and Christmas. He loves how colorful it is, and wishes I'd decorate more for other seasons. Who knew?

We put our tree up late this year, so it came down early in January. It was replaced by a "winter tree" that is smaller. I put snowmen and snowflake ornaments on it. Many are homemade. I'll probably try to make more.
Most of the Valentine things I had were lost to moisture in our basement this year. We had several inches of water in our basement due to heavy rains. I'll use what I have and try to make more from what I have on hand. My big splurge was a tiny ball of cotton yarn from Hobby Lobby. It was $2.29 for 2 oz. I used a 40% off coupon, so it was inexpensive. I made two dishcloths which will be used only in February then put up for next year. I bought another ball, so I'll have a couple more to add to the stash.

  5. Bummer about the water ruining your valentines decorations. I try to do a little seasonal decorating but sometimes I fail! Still it is nice to see things looking "happy".

  7. I hated to hear about your Valentine's Day decorations being ruined. Bless your heart. I love the way you put the winter tree up. You know, I don't think we, as women, realize how much the little touches and things we do are appreciated by our husbands. It was so sweet to read of how much this means to your husband. I trust you have a wonderful day, sweet friend. :)

  8. What a neat idea! My grandma made lovely dishcloths and lots of crochet items... it's something I haven't learned yet, lol... but my youngest taught herself watching You Tube videos and is doing well. :-) Have a lovely weekend!

    Blessings,

  18. Laura, What a sweet thing for your husband to say!

Have you ever read "Mrs. Sharp's Traditions: Reviving Victorian Family Celebrations of Comfort & Joy" In it she talks about having a "seasonal table" ; a special place to decorate for each season. I absolutely LOVE that book! Come to think of it, you remind me a lot of the modern day version of the writings contained within that book, as you make traditions, in the modern day, still so very special. :-)

It's always a pleasure to visit here!

  19. I have read Mrs. Sharp's Traditions! It has inspired me through the years. I always wished I could be as good at celebrating and seizing the day as Mrs. Sharp. I still have it even though my children are nearly grown. I might just have to pull it out again. We're not done yet! ~smile~

You have blessed me and honored me with your words. Thank you so very much!
