Coping With the Heat Without Air Conditioning by Laura Lane Photo by Ethan Sykes on Unsplash |
The weather is hot in Southern Missouri. For many years we either had no air conditioning or just a room air conditioner. Here are some ideas that our family has used to cope with the heat.
- Take a cold shower before bed.
- Use a rice or corn sack that has been in the freezer when you go to bed. An ice bag or cold pack should work too. Even a hot water bottle with ice water in it should work. It should stay cold long enough for you to fall asleep.
- Fans...fans...fans....
- Drink lots of ice water, ice tea, homemade lemonade, sugar-free lemonade, etc.
- Take another cold shower.
- Go someplace with air conditioning during the heat of the day if possible.
- Eat cold meals.
- Let cool air in at night, then shut the windows and shades.
- Put feet in cold water in bath tub.
- Pray for rain and a cold front!

I hear ya!! Already looking forward to fall, this is nuts!! lol
ReplyDeleteAmen....amen.
ReplyDeleteWhat were you doing up at 1 in the morning?!
ReplyDeleteGreg and I used to go and walk around the mall when we had really little ones just to be in the air and it didn't cost anything which was good because we didn't have anything. ;)
Are you guys still without air or do you have it in one room?
ReplyDeleteGood tips. We've been doing without air for the last 20+ years. This is about as bad as it has been during that time. If we had A/C, I'd be really tempted to turn it on. Here are some more tips.
ReplyDeleteDon't use the stove or oven. We've been cooking on the grill or in the roaster oven. We even baked bread in the grill. It turned out better than the bread we baked in the roaster oven.
Get in the garden early and late.
Close all your windows by 7:30 AM at the latest 8. You want to get them closed before the temps start rising. It really makes a difference to the temp inside the house. If you go outside for a little bit, it will actually feel cool inside.
We have a pool that the kids can jump in to cool off. It isn't big, but it works.
Lots of water, means about two gallons per day per adult. Kids will drink about 1 1/2.
I'm praying for rain. My pastures are brown and we are feeding the livestock hay. :(
I used the same image last year LOL
ReplyDeleteWe're dying up here in Montreal
( Canada ) it was 105 yesterday with the humidity - we just bought a fixer upper with no air conditioning so I was in the pool last night at midnight! And then had a cold shower because by the time I walked upstairs to go to bed I was dripping again....this is unbelievable ( and I don't want to complain because winter seemed to never end this year !!! ) ok - off to take a shower lol - stay cool !
Visting from Fluster buster!
Hugs ( sweaty ones - gross )
I don't do hot well - I am best on ice! LOL - your tips made me remember growing up in my grandmother's house:)
ReplyDeleteI'm about to take a cold shower. It is so hot!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips.
I have been doing any baking I need to do before the weather.com says it will get hot. Today I made banana muffins (shorter bake time than banana bread) before 8 in the morning with the windows open (which worked because it was still below 80). Then I closed everything up once it had cooled and enjoyed my banana muffins all day.
Hi Julie,
ReplyDeleteSounds like a good way to get baking done, Julie. I've been trying not to bake the last couple of weeks. It's actually cool here for June only the 80's. We live in SW Missouri.
Blessings,
Laura
Been there, done that! lol :P Great post! <3
ReplyDeleteThanks, Harp. I'm coming for a visit.
ReplyDeleteWhen we were without central air for a few years, we invested in a window air conditioner for the bedroom for about a hundred bucks. It was so wonderful.
ReplyDeleteSince I wrote this, we've been able to add window air, too. Awesome!
ReplyDeleteThanks for these cooling off tips. Heaven knows I need them!
ReplyDeleteGreat tips Laura! Thanks for sharing with SYC.
ReplyDeletehugs,
Jann
You're welcome, Jann.
ReplyDeleteGreat ideas! Take heart, fall is on the way. :-)
ReplyDeleteYes! Fall is my absolute favorite season. My main goal this fall is to have NO surgery! I've had breast surgery the last three years—not a fun way to enjoy my favorite season at all.
DeleteThese are great tips. We've had an unusually cool spring and early summer but this week is going to be in the 90's for the first time this year.
ReplyDeleteI feel bad for those of you with no A/C. I grew up in the midwest with no A/C and I well remember the heat and humidity.
Blessings,
Betsy
Hi Betsy,
DeleteWe've had a mild summer, too, but it's heating up. The humidity is insufferable sometimes, I must admit.
Be blessed,
Laura
We live in a dessert area and it can top out here at 110 but we do not run our air conditioner. We just can't afford it. So we stay in the basement and we fave ceiling fans. We open windows at night and allow cool air to come in and then close them in the morning. We have done this for 20 years.
ReplyDeleteHi, I hadn't thought of the basement. That's an excellent idea! I'm glad it is helping you.Mrs. Laura Lane
DeleteGrowing up in Jackson, MS was hot in the 50s. We took naps on the wood floor which was cool. Being just kids, we could sleep there with not trouble and just a sheet under us. Now, i could not get up if i could manage to even get down on the floor without hurting myself.
ReplyDeleteOh wow! I forgot about napping on the floor. I don't remember if we had sheets under us or not. I don't even pray on my knees usually since it's so hard to get up.~smile~
DeleteWe did not have central ac when I was a child but do not remember that so much....but am glad to have had it for the majority of life. When I traveled to Samoa (one of the hottest places I could ever imagine!), I came home ever so grateful for air conditioning....and try to remember that often!
ReplyDeleteWow Jennifer! I have a friend from Samoa. You think of the beauty of the islands, but don't think about the heat so much. I'll bet the humidity was terrific!
