I have switched to making my own laundry detergent last month. I make it with borax, washing soda and bars of ivory soap. I grate 3 small bars of Ivory soap. I add 2 cups of borax and 2 cups of washing soda. I mix it all together and put it in quart canning jars. I then use 2-3 T per load. Nothing new. You can find recipes for laundry detergent all over the web.
My problem came when I had an oily stain and no liquid laundry detergent to pretreat with. Hmmm. If Dawn dish soap takes grease away from your dishes and hands, why not clothes? So, I wetted the area, put just a drop or two of Dawn on the stain, added just a bit more water and scrubbed the area together. I then washed as usual with the homemade detergent. It worked! I then tried it on other stains as they came up. It worked, even on ketchup! I was so pleased. I've since tried Joy and a store brand of dish soap. They worked, too. So, I have a new stain remover without a new item on my grocery list!!

ReplyDeleteA little laundry lady I knew made a concoction of Dawn and baking soda, make a paste out of it. She would use it on table cloths from restarants, it got all the stains out, amazing stuff! Dawn is the best!

ReplyDeleteIt's so good to hear from you. Yes, I've been using this detergent for about a month now. So far, so good. It doesn't leave my clothes smelling perfumy; but, they smell clean. They also look clean. I use 2 T for a large load of regular laundry. I use 3 T for a large load of towels and/or jeans. I like this recipe much better than the one you cook. I don't like using gloppy liquids. That's the way mine seem to turn out.
