A Thrifty Week #15

Amy Lane Photography
Happy today everyone!
Over a period of fourteen weeks last summer, I shared what I did each week to be thrifty.  Since it was so popular with y'all, and I am so much thriftier when I'm keeping track, I've decided to write A Thrifty Week again.  Here are some things I've done in the last few days:

~ I returned a package of fuzzy fungi (button mushrooms) to Aldi.  They will refund your purchase price and replace your product with a fresh one.

~ Litfuse notified me that I'll be receiving Karen Barnett's new book, Out of the Ruins, to review in May for free.

~ I had my children measure out just 1/2 cup of cheese crackers for a snack.  I bought them at Aldi.

~ I put pickle slices on a plate to serve with dinner.  They were gone at the end of the meal.  If I'd put the jar on the table, it would have been nearly empty by the end of the meal.  I have some pickle monsters. ~smile~

~ We attended a trade show in Branson.  There were lots of free food samples.  We didn't even have to buy lunch.

~ The children were blessed to see a movie at the Imax as a gift from one of my husband's friends.

~ I invested some money in good tools- a mini shaver to get pills off sweaters and a new iron.  My husband insisted that I get a good quality iron that will last for several years.  My last one was a little cheapy that someone gave to me.  I was thankful to have it, but it began leaking profusely after just a few months.

~ I shaved the pills off my husband's favorite sweater vest.  I invested forty-five minutes, but I couldn't make it or make the money to replace it in forty-five minutes.

It's been a really busy week.  It's been a good week.
Be blessed and be thrifty!

  1. I enjoy post on being thrifty/frugal. It encourages me to keep doing what I can to stretch my pennies.

Great tip on measuring the snacks! I seem to fly through Goldfish and measuring a serving might help to stretch them.

    Thanks for sharing!

  4. Hi Wendi,
It did make the box last longer. Goldfish just swim into tummies when I have them around!

  5. Hello there Laura!

Thank you so much for reminding us to be thrifty when we can. Every little bit helps. We only eat out once every couple of months for a treat date. I make everything from scratch and use less sugars. I make my own fresh lemonade and of course our Peach Iced Tea. And, I always try to look on the bargain racks at the store before shopping for the must have items.

I hope you have a wonderful week!

    Hugs,
    Amy

PS... We got a wonderfully wet snowstorm 3 days ago and a bit of rain yesterday. Thanks for all your prayers. Oh, and they are calling for rain later today.
Praising God, for he is Good!

  7. These things sound great. I have been making my kids measure out cereal when we have it in the house. They don't like that and I do allow them a bit over the serving size, but they are more conscious of how much they are using. We also have toast w/ it or something so they are not going hungry. :)

  12. Hi Gentle Joy,
Measuring makes us all notice how much we're using. ~smile~ I rarely buy cereal, but I've got a box in the cabinet that we'll use early tomorrow morning because we must leave the house by 7 a.m. I'll be over for a visit soon.
    Blessings,
    Laura

  13. Hi Amy!
It's always such a pleasure to see your name in my inbox! You're so right about every little bit. I've not posted a "Thrifty Week" for months. I found that it really does keep my thoughts on thrift when I know I can "get credit" by blogging about it. ~smile~ I would love to know how you make your Peach Iced Tea. My son loves it, but I won't pay for Crystal Light.
I'll be over for a visit soon.
    Happy today!

  14. Good for you, thrifty lady!! And I agree it's easier to be thrifty when you're holding yourself accountable. I can proudly say that I didn't purchase a kindle book in the past 3 weeks! :-)

I hope you have a wonderful thrifty week.

  19. Hi! I'm visiting from The Prudent Homemaker's blog! What did you use to shave your husbands sweater? I was unable to wear some of my most favorite sweaters due to the pilling :( Liz Claiborne that I got a great deal on at Sam's Club last winter. $6.98 each. Loved them so much I bought 3. Teal, Black and cream. But they've pilled so bad. The problem with acrylic fibers.
Anyway, I was looking for a decent sweater shaver. Which one did you use? Thanks!

  20. Hi Kelly,
I bought this shaver for $7 or $8 at Wal-Mart. It's the Evercare giant fabric shaver. It's like this one on Amazon.

    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0014UGDQA/ref=s9_psimh_gw_p364_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=1S2REX3QED5BHCVXBVYG&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=1688200382&pf_rd_i=507846

I'm not an affiliate, I just thought you might like to see what I bought. I like it because it has a larger shaving surface than the little one I had years ago.

    Blessings,
    Laura
