Little House Thoughts... Ma is the True Heroine

The Little House Books. As a child, I read them over and over and over. They helped to shape how I think. They helped me realize how close a family can be. They helped me learn that I can do with what I've got and get through hard times.

I've always thought that Laura Ingalls was my "heroine". Just recently, however, I've realized that it is truly her Ma that is my hero. She did what she could with what she had and tried her best to be cheerful about it. She taught her children and made sure they knew God, too. She also loved a wonderful but difficult man. After all, he wouldn't stay put!

Ma was very resourceful. She could make something out of nothing. She made do with what she had, and didn't complain. She was cheerful. She looked at the bright side... even if there wasn't a bright side! She loved her husband. She loved her children and insisted they be brought up with good manners regardless of where they lived. She was a proper lady, but she got her hands dirty keeping house, cooking, and working alongside Pa when he needed her. She was truly his helpmeet... just as God intended.

Just something to think about....
Blessings,
Laura

  1. I too relished the Little House books as a child.
I had the complete set kept safe in their yellow case.
I shared them with my own children as well...
And look forward to doing it again with our youngest blessing, Flynn.
And I agree with your thoughts!
Ma was indeed the true heroine!
Thanks for the lovely post this chilly November morning. : )

    1. I had all the books, but no case. I saved my allowance each week for Little House and Nancy Drew books. Quite a combination. Wouldn't you say?

I just found this comment in my inbox. I know it's old, but thoughts of a nice chilly November morning are just too intriguing.

  2. Wonderful blog post today! In the mother of Laura Ingals Wilder you highlighted the positive traits we all need to have. I am convicted of some attitudes/behavior I've had as a result of reading this fine example.

Have a wonderful weekend, and thanks for such a thoughtful post.

    1. I have no idea why this just came up in my inbox!
Ma Ingalls is definitely an excellent example of being long suffering, submissive to her husband, and infinitely resourceful!
      Blessings to you!

  4. I am just like you - I read and read those books as a girl, but as mom I really see that Caroline is the heroine! I often have thought to myself, "What would Ma do?"

  6. Laura, I actually consider Caroline Ingalls a "Spiritual Mentor". I used to faithfully watch Little House on the Prairie in the evenings, after a homeschool day. I desired to emulate Caroline's gentle and loving spirit toward her children, even when disciplining. Her love and devotion to her home and her husband, her hard work ethic and always looking for the good in everyone and every situation.

Your blog post resonated with me so much. I look forward to reading the Little House books to my granddaughter. :-)

P.S. I just put together that your name is Laura, like Laura Ingalls! ;-) lol.

  7. I wonder just how many women, over the decades, have been fashioned by those books! I've always had a pioneer, self sufficient steak in me. Those books are definitely a part of it.

And I agree with you, Ma was a hero. But they all were, in their own ways.

Laura also wrote books for adults.
One is called, "Pioneer Girl" and is worth the effort to find.

  8. Oops! That was mistake. That's not the name of the book. I have it upstairs and post the title later. 80)

  9. Caroline/Ma truly was an inspiration and positive role model. I so admire her patience and ability to make a wonderful home for her family regardless of her surroundings. I try to read everything "Laura" and am now enjoying "Pioneer Girl - The Annotated Biography" by Pamela Smith Hill. Lot of interesting background info. Thanks so much for sharing your insights on Caroline!

  10. Hi Carolyn,
I haven't seen that Laura book yet. You can learn so much from Laura's writings. I'll be over for a visit in a few minutes.
    Blessings,

  11. I love the Little House books! I read them growing up and read them aloud to my girls when they were young. I don't know how Ma did it each day. Sometimes there was nothing to work with, but she managed. Thanks for the memories!

  13. Ma did seem like a real Proverbs 31 woman. I love the scene from the Long Winter where she takes a green pumpkin and makes a pie. What a way to brighten up a bad day!

  16. I am visiting from Winter's and am glad I am. Being a retired teacher and even a children's librarian, I have to admit, ashamedly, that I have not read these books. I have actually had them on a list of TBR and now I know I want to read them even more. Thanks.
