Homeschooling The Myth and The Truth

Hello,

As we draw near the end of the school year, I'm thinking about how my kids are getting older. Amy is 15, Michael is 17, and Emily is now 19. My oldest, Matthew, is 26.  He's out on his own now, but calls and comes by often.  It's been so neat to have the privilege of being with my children as their personalities and interests develop.  Homeschooling has been a great privilege. I wouldn't trade being a stay-at-home mom for anything.  I never made a paycheck that was worth the relationships I have with my four children.

Thank you Lowell!
Thank you God!

Thankful to be Momma

P.S.
Big myth—your husband has to make a lot of money if you're going to stay home.
Truth—you have to stretch your money if you're going to stay home.

  1. SO very true...and God always makes a way if we are in the center of His will. He is ever faithful. I am so thankful you are enjoying this homeschooling journey. It is hard to believe another homeschool year is coming to a close. Where does the time go? God bless you, sweet friend. :)

  2. You my friend are blessed! I love being a homemaker and teaching my kids. It's an honor and a blessing with great rewards!
And yes you are right, stretch where you can and sacrifice the fancier things. No amount of money is worth losing your relationdhips with our kiddos. :)

    God always provides!

    Enjoy your day Laura!

    Hugs, Amy

  3. Laura, I can so relate to this post. We homeschooled our boys for 9 years (through high school) on a very limited budget and had to stretch every single penny. Our boys even pitched in to save our cat giving us their hard earned money from jobs they had here in town when he required surgery. Looking at my grown sons now and the close relationship we all share along with what kind, determined and successful people they are fills my heart. They were and are worth every sacrifice we made.

  4. Great truth, Laura! I've always been a stay-at-home mom and sometimes we've gotten by with one car, etc. The sacrifice to stay home and raise my own children was/is so worth it. And homeschooling is so beneficial for building strong bonds, especially in the teen years (in my opinion). My kids are now 14, 19, 21 and 24.

    1. I do think we have a better chance to keep relationships strong if we homeschool since teens get so busy as they get older. Thanks so much for writing Camie!

  9. I, too, am thankful that I homeschooled my children. I've been finished for several years now, as they finished high school in 2008 and 2010. Being together all those years really helped me build super relationships with them.

I will say, though, that we homeschool moms have to be careful to not put the "homeschool is the only way" burden on those who have chosen to do things differently. God leads each of us differently, and we need to accept others' decisions and not criticize them.

    Have a beautiful day,
    Patti

    1. Yes, you are right Patti. I would not want anyone to feel the burden if they didn't feel God was calling them to it. It's wonderful, but it's tough, too... just like all parenting!

  11. It is worth every penny I stretch and every thing I say no to in order to be home. On May 23rd we close the chapter of attending a little Christian school and Megan will begin the homeschool journey as a 6th grader. I am beyond grateful to be able to bring her home fulltime!
