Thrifty Things Lately at Harvest Lane Cottage #150

Hello ladies, please read my note at the bottom of this post.

I'm so glad you came by to visit me. I like to share my thrifty and frugal projects, ways of saving money, frugal cooking, and my blessings from God. Keeping a record of the ways that God provides and the ways that I am resourceful truly builds my faith. I encourage you to keep a record, too.

~ Ham and beans and cornbread for supper then leftovers

~ I made 3 quarts of Super Cheap Super Quick Laundry Detergent.

~ I am knitting socks with yarn that was given to me. There was no tag, so I don't know the fiber content or the company. I am having fun with these colors.

~ I'm using the Fish Lips Kiss pattern for the heel which has resulted in perfectly fitting socks for me and for my husband. The pattern is only $1 on Ravelry.

~ I am saving so much time and avoiding impulse purchases by using Walmart's free pick up service! I encourage you to give it a try. Please use my referral link to sign up. It's free, and you get $10 off your first order, and I get $10 off my next order if you try it.

~ I signed up for Casey's convenience store rewards program and received a free slice of breakfast pizza.

~ When I bought drinks at the convenience store, I brought my own cup.

~ Mr. Lane and I went out to McDonalds after church, because we had to get right back to church to help with the Baldnobbers' concert. We each ordered the $2 double cheeseburger and fries and $1 iced tea. Lunch for 2 for $6 plus tax. Good in a pinch. ~smile~

~ I worked my part-time job. It's helping me add to our savings account, buy some necessities, and save for a wig. I've currently got my eye on Voltage by Raquel Welch in SS10 Shadow Shades Chestnut. I look forward to going to a local wig shop in a few weeks to try it on and see if I need the large or not. My hair just never grew back in correctly in the front after chemotherapy.

~ I mended some of my family's clothing.

~ I've packed my lunch each day that I work. It's been simple food:
  • Peanut butter and jelly sandwich with grapes
  • Egg salad sandwich and grapes
  • Tuna salad sandwich and grapes or applesauce
  • Simple salads
  • I also carry water and sometimes iced tea from home.
~ My son changed the filters and oil in our cars saving us about fifty dollars.

~ My daughter and I enjoyed buy one get one free smoothies from Tropical Smoothie Cafe.

~ I wore the skirts I made recently to work. I wore this one with a black sweater that I've had for maybe 15 years.

~ I made even more Super Cheap Super Quick Laundry Detergent. My cocoa recipe is in that Gooseberry Patch book.

~ After being unable to purchase toilet paper, I used some old t shirts to make reusable wipes for tinkling. It will make the paper I do have last longer.

Sometimes, there are going to be times that we cannot buy what we want or need. Maybe it's because we do not have enough money, the money we have needs to be used for something else, or maybe the product we want is not available. This is the time when our resourcefulness and prayer will pull us through. We need to pray and think about what we do have and how we can use it to meet our needs. The more resourceful we are, the better we live.

Do not give in to fear about circumstances. God has not given us a spirt of fear but power and of love and a sound mind. 2 Timothy 1:7

We can do all things through Christ who strengthens us. Philipians 4:13

This is the time to get in God's word and pray.

You may give share prayer requests with me in the comments or by email.

God is so good.
Praise God!

Keep calm and pray on,
Laura
Blessed to be a blessing

  2. Lovely photos and thoughts, my friend.
    You are looking wonderful!
I was just thinking this morning that now is the time to realize we may not be able to have all that we want. And perhaps we will focus on what we need instead. Hugs from Pennsylvania.

    1. You are so right Billie Jo. You know that the last few years have been a real struggle for me physically and financially. I've learned a lot about differentiating between wants and needs. One way or another, my needs are always met. God has helped me become resourceful, and he has been my resource. He is good! He never leaves us or forsakes us.Be blessed dear friend,Laurawho is looking forward to meeting you someday in person

    1. Hi Anne, Yes, I have been using the cloths for the last couple of days. It's not bothering me at all. I may just keep doing it. It would save me money in the long run. One more thrifty thing! I think I need to make more though. I stopped because my sewing machine was skipping stitches. I didn't have a ballpoint needle that is needed for knits. I hope you have a lovely week. Be blessed, LauraP.S. I'll drop by and visit soon.

    1. Oh Tajuana, You are so very kind. I'm glad that sharing my struggles and my ways of overcoming are helpful. Sometimes I have felt so broken and financially broke that I thought no one would want to read what what I wrote. It seems that sharing my troubles and how God has helped me overcome them has been more helpful than I could have imagined.  I love to find real women in the blog world who give encouragement to be real and be wholly committed to God and our families. Hugs to you, Laura

    1. Hi Mandy,
So far, I've been satisfied with it. I will not mix it with bleach, because I don't know if it will cause problems. I also have not used it on brand new clothes since we rarely buy brand new clothes. ~smile~
      I hope you like it.Blessings,Laura

  8. Hello - I always love your thrifty posts as they do inspire me. I love your skirts. I think we may all be using cloths for personal hygiene before long. Glad to hear that the new job is going well. God bless you. Hugs from UT!

    1. Hi Deb,  I think we'll just have to watch how things pan out. We need to look for all the joy in life and splash the love of Jesus and encouragement to all we come into contact with... even if we are 6 or more feet apart!

  9. As always, I find your blog posts a great blessing, and they inspire me to greater creativity and gratitude, even through hard times.
For anyone who cannot sew and runs low on TP, a clean spray bottle filled with water works like a "bidet" for #1 allowing TP to last longer.
Some parts of the country are now on lockdown. Where I am, we can still leave our homes, but all school is cancelled and all restaurants and other public gatherings (including church) are closed/cancelled. When the school and other closings were announced, many people went to the store at the same time, trying to buy for the 2-3 week minimum that it's expected we might be housebound. (If anyone in a household becomes ill, the entire household is quarantined and cannot go out at all, so no shopping. Plus, if the city becomes full of coronavirus, nobody will want to go out at all). By the time I got to the store, no TP to be had, but I had purchased some previously for our general stockpile so we'll ration that. Additionally, some grocery stores closed the same day as the school announcement, reducing supply.
The news reports that the country has plenty of TP, it's just a logistics issue of playing catch-up, so hopefully it'll get to your store. Perhaps ask what day their delivery is and plan have someone go at the store opening that day, or run over during lunch.

    1. Thank you. God prompted a friend to bring some to us from the package she found for sale.
I also made more tinkle wipes.

  10. The socks are lovely in color and you have been a very thrifty girl! I am thankful I bought more toilet paper than I needed a few weeks ago. I had forgotten I had bought it already and bought more. Now we are good for some time! Sometimes being forgetful is a good thing!

    I love this!
Your sock(s) are beautiful. I only know how to knit dishcloths. My goal is to make my own socks as I love hand knit socks. I'm teaching myself so it's very slow going. I've not used the connected needles yet. Thank you for the pattern recommendation. It's difficult to know which patterns will turn out like they are supposed to. I will look it up.
