The Missing Lady of the House

Just one of many leprechaun traps the kids set this week.

Hey y'all,

I know I haven't been around much lately. Please forgive me. I started substituting in December. In January, I signed up for a 1-day special ed paraprofessional position. When I showed up on February 16th, they told me it was now for 3 days. I changed my schedule, and on Friday they asked me to come back. I've now been substituting for a month Tuesday through Friday at a elementary school in my town. I'm teaching kindergarten through 3rd grade special ed reading, language arts, writing, and math. I did not my plan to work more than 3 days a week, but I have fallen in love with the kids. Yes they can be naughty like other kids, but they can also be so sweet. I like teaching 1-5 students at a time more than 25-30.

The teacher that I am replacing has moved out of town. They are interviewing people now. This next week is spring break. I might come back for a day or two the following week, or I might come back for weeks or months. I don't know. Either way, I hope to write more. I also hope to find a way to be much more thrifty and figure out how to get things done at home.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Laura

  2. HOLA LAURA: SE LO DIFICIL QUE DEBE SER ENSEÑAR A NIÑOS CON NECESIDADES ESPECIALES, YO SOY MAMA DE 3 NIÑOS CON DISTINTAS DISCAPACIDADES Y ES UN ENORME TRABAJO PODER LLEGAR A ESTOS NIÑOS, PODER HACER QUE TE COMPRENDAN Y QUE ENTIENDAN LO QUE LES ESTAS ENSEÑANDO, ES TODO UN DESAFIO. POR EJEMPLO, 2 DE MIS 3 HIJOS NO HABLAN TIENEN SINDROME DE DOWN, SE LES HACE MUY DIFICIL COMUNICARSE, COMO LOS ADOPTAMOS YA GRANDES, 3,4 Y 5 AÑOS RESPECTIVAMENTE, NUNCA FUERON ASISTIDOS POR PROFESIONALES PARA LA ESTIMULACION TEMPRANA, ASI QUE A NOSOTROS NOS TOCO LA TAREA DE ENSEÑARLES COMO PUDIMOS A QUE APRENDAN A HACER COSAS TAN BASICAS COMO CAMBIARSE, LAVARSE LAS MANOS,CEPILLARSE LOS DIENTES, COMER USANDO LOS UTENSILLOS, ECT. NO SABIAN HACER NADA, FUE UN TRABAJO ARDUO PERO CON MUCHO AMOR DE NUESTRA PARTE, HOY TIENEN 17, 15 Y 13 AÑOS, HAN APRENDIDO ALGO A TRAVES DE TODOS ESTOS AÑOS QUE LOS TENEMOS CON NOSOTROS, SON BASTANTE INDEPENDIENTES, TAMBIEN HAN CONCURRIDO A ESCUELAS ESPECIALES PERO LOS DOWN YA NO ASISTEN, SOLO EL DE 17 AÑOS QUE TIENE MIELOMENINGOCELE, ANDA EN SILLA DE RUEDAS Y EL SI PUEDE HABLAR, PERO NO HA APRENDIDO NADA EN LA ESCUELA, SE QUE ES DIFICIL ENSEÑAR A ESTA CLASE DE NIÑOS, HAY QUE PONER MUCHO ESMERO Y EMPEÑO, PACIENCIA Y DEDICACION, NO ES PARA CUALQUIER PERSONA. TE FELICITO Y QUE DIOS TE DE FORTALEZA PARA ESTE TRABAJO DE AMOR Y COMPRENSION.

HELLO LAURA: I KNOW HOW DIFFICULT IT MUST BE TO TEACH CHILDREN WITH SPECIAL NEEDS, I AM A MOTHER OF 3 CHILDREN WITH DIFFERENT DISABILITIES AND IT IS A HUGE JOB TO BE ABLE TO REACH THESE CHILDREN, TO BE ABLE TO MAKE THEM UNDERSTAND YOU AND WHAT YOU ARE TEACHING THEM, IT IS ALL A CHALLENGE. FOR EXAMPLE, 2 OF MY 3 CHILDREN DO NOT SPEAK, THEY HAVE DOWN SYNDROME, IT MAKES IT VERY DIFFICULT FOR THEM TO COMMUNICATE, AS WE ADOPTED THEM ALREADY GREAT, 3, 4 AND 5 YEARS OLD, RESPECTIVELY, THEY WERE NEVER HELPED BY PROFESSIONALS FOR EARLY STIMULATION, SO WE WE HAD THE TASK OF TEACHING THEM HOW WE WERE ABLE TO LEARN HOW TO DO THINGS AS BASIC AS CHANGING, WASHING HANDS, BRUSHING TEETH, EATING USING UTENSILS, ECT. THEY DID NOT KNOW HOW TO DO ANYTHING, IT WAS HARD WORK BUT WITH A LOT OF LOVE FROM US, TODAY THEY ARE 17, 15 AND 13 YEARS OLD, THEY HAVE LEARNED SOMETHING THROUGH ALL THESE YEARS THAT WE HAVE THEM WITH US, THEY ARE QUITE INDEPENDENT, THEY HAVE ALSO ATTENDED SCHOOLS SPECIAL BUT THE DOWNS NO LONGER ATTEND, ONLY THE 17-YEAR-OLD ONE WHO HAS MYELOMENINGOCELE, WALKS IN A WHEELCHAIR AND HE CAN SPEAK, BUT HE HAS NOT LEARNED ANYTHING AT SCHOOL, I KNOW IT IS DIFFICULT TO TEACH THIS KIND OF CHILDREN, YOU HAVE TO PUTTING A LOT OF CARE AND PERFORMANCE, PATIENCE AND DEDICATION, IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. I CONGRATULATE YOU AND MAY GOD GIVE YOU STRENGTH FOR THIS WORK OF LOVE AND UNDERSTANDING.

    2. It is an honor Serviendo. There is only one Down's child in this group. She's a sweet girl. The others have other problems including autism and language problems. Most are hispanic and English is a second language. That's a challenge for any child.

  3. Love the leprechaun trap :-) Also, I've worked in the Sped room and also enjoyed it very much. You are a blessing to them as it's not a job for everyone.
