I have been so excited to write to you this season about favorite recipes, memories, Christmas quotes, and ideas to enjoy Christmas a bit more this year. One of my favorite things to do is make Candy Cane Cocoa. I'm planning to share the recipe in a couple of days. I was in for a big surprise. Never in my lifetime did I expect this! The United States is experiencing a candy cane shortage!
I like Bob's candy canes the best. I couldn't find them. I was searching for them on-line, and I was shocked to find that Walmart is charging $6.99 for a box of twelve Brach's candy canes— and they have to ship it to me! Every other flavor is $1.72. I then looked on Amazon, and I found that they are charging $9.98 for two boxes of twelve. Needless to say, candy canes aren't going on my tree or in my cocoa this year. I'm still going to share my original post about making the cocoa if you happen to find a sale.
Since I was at the computer, I started Googling. Why the sudden price hike? It seems that in the last few years domestic sugar crops were lost in Hurricane Ida, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture stated that many peppermint and spearmint crops were being lost to fungus.
We are definitely subject to supply chain issues. But now, for another surprise to me. When I Googled candy canes again, within five minutes of my first search, to check other sources, an ad from Walmart popped up with peppermint candy canes for $1.72! I clicked on it, and added it to my cart. Why were they only showing it as $6.99 before?
This is definitely weird. Do we have a Crippling Loss or a Candy Cane Mystery?
Well, if I can indeed purchase the candy canes for $1.72, I will be making a small batch of candy cane cocoa. I'll leave the rest of the candy canes for other sleuths to track down. Stay tuned for the recipe in a couple of days.
Happy Kringling dear reader!

Jesus be Glorified!
WOW! That's pretty expensive. I'm hoping the last prices was correct for you. Prices have really put a damper on hoiliday meals this year.
ReplyDeleteTake care, blessings and hugs,
Betsy
I'll soon find out!
DeleteWe may all be better off with a sugar shortage.
ReplyDeleteYou may be right, Sandi. Several years ago, I decided to go off soda pop. It was so hard. I couldn't even get a Coke at the fountain for my husband. The sound, the fizz, oh my! Here I am, years later, and once in awhile I still think I want a pop. One sip of my husband's and ew! The fizz burns my throat, and I no longer like the taste.
DeleteThat's what I need to do with sugar. It's so hard. I think the only way it's going to work is to go cold turkey. Cutting down doesn't make my cravings go away. Ugh. Now I have to think seriously about this. What have I written? ~ grimace ~
Have yourself a merry little Christmas!

What is your recipe?
ReplyDeleteHi Sandi,
DeleteI'll be sharing it later this week. I still need to get to the grocery store for ingredients. If they do end up being too expensive, I'll still share it.
Happy Advent Season!
Laura
I've been on the hunt for organic peppermint syrup for my mix of coffee and homemade hot chocolate. I have not found it just yet, and/or organic made candy canes either.
ReplyDeleteHello! I do hope you find it. If you do, please share the link with us here.

My goodness girl! That's crazy how much they cost. I better see what Dollar Tree is charging. I have to watch The Deal Guy on YouTube to see if he mentions candy canes.
ReplyDeleteI haven't see The Deal Guy come up in my YouTube feed lately. He's always got great ideas.
DeleteBe blessed, my dear, and have yourself a happy, joyful, Jesus centered Christmas filled with all the peace and rest you can grasp!
