Homespun Devotions Volume Three

It is always a pleasure to share books that I truly enjoy with you, dear reader. Today's book is Homespun Devotions by Cheryl Smith of the blogs, Homespun Devotions and Biblical Minimalism.

Mrs. Cheryl Smith is a true believer in our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. As a long-time reader of her blog, "Homespun Devotions", a personal correspondent of many years, and receiver of great personal encouragement in some of the hardest times of my life, I believe I know her heart for the Lord and for others. I believe a quote in chapter 13 of Homestead Devotions Volume Three, page 63, describes her beautifully.
"Their calm demeanor, unshakeable faith, resolute determination to follow God to the end of their days regardless of personal cost, and utter selflessness were evidence of their close walk with Him and touched everything they did."

Cheryl has a way of describing an everyday situation and finding the God breeze in it. She's thoughtful. She listens to Holy Spirit, and he reveals things to her from the Bible that apply to whatever situation she's in. He's good like that. Seek Him. Ask Him. He'll do it for you, too. Back to Cheryl, in all, good, bad, hard, easy, hopeful, or heartbreaking, she gives God the glory.

Cheryl's love for Jesus flows through the pages of this book. It's one for slow reading and contemplation. I believe Holy Spirit will speak to you directly through these pages. He's spoken to me.

Here are a couple of my favorite quotes from the book.

"One morning, as I prayed about a puzzling situation, I realized it was way bigger than me or anything I could muster or solve."   page 23 (It just touched my heart again as I typed it.)

"I heard him whisper, 'Leave this battle in my hands. It is my battle, not yours. It is big but not bigger than me. Give me time to work. Let me do this my way. I will take care of you and do what is best." pages 25-26 (This one will make it into my quote book.)

I love the heartfelt devotional nature of every story. They truly make me think. Here are some of the recipes that I want to try:

  • Homemade biscuits
  • Hot dog chili sauce
  • Parmesan chicken
  • Mexican Dip
  • Pork roast 7 ways
  • Must Go Soup
This is a book that you'll not only read, I think you'll keep it and refer back to it, not only for the recipes but the wisdom that Cheryl shares. I give it five stars.

From the author:

Christian living is like a quilt—multi-colored scraps of wisdom gleaned and assembled one stitch at a time. We learn as we go, as the common thread of the Gospel of Jesus Christ is woven throughout the everyday moments, events, and situations we encounter. Only He can tie the pieces together and create something of beauty that will serve to warm the hearts of others and surround them with His grace.

"
Homespun Devotions: Volume One" began a series of books that record the piecing together of many of the stories of my life and the rich spiritual truths God has imparted along the way. Homespun Devotions: Volume Two continued that process; this is Volume Three. As you read these homespun narratives of family, love, marriage, motherhood, friendship, and the music that is such a part of my heritage, you will discover glimpses into moments of the soul-searching and intense struggles I have experienced while journeying to a place of complete surrender to the One who bled and died for me.

Homespun Devotions: Volume Three is unique, in that it also includes a recipe after each of the 50 devotionals! Some of the recipes are mine, others are ones I have accumulated. But each recipe is special to my family and me.

I point you to no denomination, religious group, or sect—only to the foot of the cross of Jesus Christ, where redemption, restoration, healing, and peace still freely and lavishly flow. He loves you with a never-ending, unconditional love—I pray you embrace this truth afresh and with a deeper persuasion as you read.

  1. Absolutely beautiful. I am learning to leave it
to God. It's a hard thing to let go and let him
take care of you. We don't like to relinquish
    control.
But when you do your life improves so much.
The peace I have searched for all my life and
    never had till now.
I still struggle with fear about the state
    of the country and world.
As of I could do anything about the rampant evil!
But I take a breath and give it to God.
It is his battle and he is more than up to the
    task.
I'm going to look on Amazon for this book.

Thanks for writing me back!

This life only works with Jesus. The next life is a continuation of this one—make sure you spend it with Jesus. Jesus is the only way to God the Father!
