Our Most Cherished Tradition: Decorating the Christmas Tree—Lane Family Rules

What is your must-have holiday decoration item or decor, and why?

For our family, we must have our beautiful Christmas tree, all our yearly ornaments, and some lights.

These things are central to our most cherished tradition—decorating the tree.

Each year I make or buy a new ornament for each child and one for my husband and me. We have three tree decorating rules.
  • Father, mother, and all four kids must be present.
  • Good food!
  • The first ornament is gold tinsel that my husband twisted to form "I love you" back when we were dating. This is followed by our first Christmas together ornament—1986. We then add ornaments year-by-year and share a memory from that year. As we get to our children's birth years, they join in. The kids can't wait to be born each year!
What is YOUR most cherished tradition?

  3. Honestly, my son and I learned that we step back and allow hubby to do it...we like handing him the ornaments and oohing and ahhing over the ornaments and the memories...I have always bought our son a ornament since he was a baby, and now, when he gets ready to move on and have a family of his own, he will have ornaments to go with, wink.

    1. That will be great Linda. I wish I'd had ornaments to start with. My oldest is 25 and has left his ornaments at home for now. Someday....

When do you put the tree up? Do you have a certain day? or just whenever you have time?? Just curious?

    1. We don't have a certain day to put it up, though my preference is sometime the weekend after Thanksgiving. That didn't work out for us this year. It just has to be a time when we can all be together. One year, when my son was away at school and my husband was working out of town, we had to wait until the weekend before Christmas. We kept it up longer that year.

      God bless you Judy!

  7. Decorating the tree is ours! And I still love that the boys put more than one ornament on each limb! My tree is full of stories and many precious memories! I have an ornament in memory of my dad and one for my grandma. I hold those dearly as they are truly missed this time of year.

I hope you are enjoying this Christmas season and making new memories to cherish!

    Hugs to you Laura!

    1. Oh, that sounds wonderful Amy. We're in a year of transition. The middle kiddles have decided they're grown up. (19 and 17) So, some of our traditions are going by the wayside. We have to find a new normal for us. Be blessed and enjoy yours while they are young!
      Hugs,
      Laura

  9. We love decorating our tree, too - we have lots of sentimental ornaments that we put on it every year. My favorite tradition, though, is our Christmas Eve tradition. We eat a special meal, go downtown to a dessert restaurant for a special dessert, then head home to read the Christmas story from Luke 2 before everyone heads off to bed!

Hope you have a Merry Christmas!

    1. What an awesome tradition. A dessert restaurant is a fabulous idea! We have ice cream and frozen custard shops, but that's it in our area.
