As I write ... Sunday Night and Monday Morning
The weather.... Sunday night... I've been listening to thunderstorms in the distance. I just saw lightening flash in the distance. By the radar, it looks like there are storms all around us—mostly to the south. Hopefully, they will bypass us. Monday morning... The air is fresh and clean, the sky is overcast, and the birds are rejoicing!
Right now I am... thinking about what a wonderful Easter Day it has been. Church this morning with all my children, an impromptu invitation to a single lady at church to join us for dinner, ham, sweet potato casserole, sweet corn, raw carrots, and little crescent rolls. Yum! Supper was popcorn followed by lemon bars for dessert.

Looking forward to this week... The kids have a spring program Friday with their homeschool co-op. Why We Homeschool
Looking around the house... Ants. I've got to call the exterminator! They invaded over the weekend.

Father God, I pray that each reader will hear Holy Spirit speaking to her or him today. Help each find peace by trusting in you, your son Jesus the Christ, and the Holy Spirit. I pray that you will bring them and their unsaved loved ones to salvation in Jesus. I ask in Jesus' Name. Amen.

Ellen has steadily gotten better. Immediately after surgery her left side was mostly paralysed, and now she has most of her motor control, and they are doing occupational and physical therapy, helping her stand again and use her arms and legs.
April 12th they will take her off of antibiotics, and at that point most likely she will be transferred to Carthage health and wellness center, like she was last time. After that we plan on getting her plenty of therapy until she can stand and walk on her own, which will be close to six months.

I love lilacs,your house will smell so wonderful. Tis the season for ants, huh? We had them visit us last week, not what you want to see when you are getting ready to host a large family event. So far (fingers crossed), the cinnamon I sprinkled inside and the spray my husband used outside is working. Hope you have a lovely week!
ReplyDeleteOh Jean, I went out today, and there just aren't enough lilacs to perfume the house. I am going to enjoy the few that we have though. My husband is going to have to prune the bushes and see if he can get them to bloom properly next year.

Laura, until the exterminator gets there, try Terro ant baits. At first it attracts more, but then they just disappear. We haven't called an ext. since we started keeping them handy. They were suggested to me by an online friend in FL, who said they had the worst ant problems ever. I know they work great in FL, CA, & here in KS. We get them at Ace. We empty our counters, put the trap in their path, and leave them be. We eat sandwiches or something easy during those couple of days. Then we don't see them again until the following Spring. And we've been repeating that since 2004 without having to call anyone. (I probably just jinxed myself, huh?!)

Thank you for the advice Debby. The exterminator did come this morning. He put out some bait for them...probably similar to what you use. I may try that before we call him again. This was a free follow-up since they had treated the house in March.

Terror does work, I used to buy them at Walmart or Lowe's home center.
DeleteRead the main ingredient to kill is borax, yes the laundry kind.
I put a very small amount in a tiny bit of sugar water, or syrup. Mixed it, then put it in dime size little puddles on scrap pieces of tiny cardboard, maybe as big as a quarter. I put these near entrance spots.
They will come and take the bait back to their nest, there they feed the queen, and then the nest dies. It does take a few days. It is not fool proof, but works very well.
They will not cross a white line. I have sprayed the borax using a dry spray bottle around the outside of the house foundation.
One of the easiest ways to kill ants on your counters is to take a small bit it dawn dish detergent, smear it on your hands, or on a dry cloth or paper napkin, and then just spread it all over your counters. Rub it out, then take a cloth and buff it dry and shiny, so you can't see it. When they walk through it, I gets on their feet, they automatically die.
I do this often, I put it on my tile table and around my counters. Any time, I have any kind of sweet sugar thing or fruit on the table. Rarely I will find a tenny dead one, never the medium or large ones, the next day, but I never have them crawling around.
I would not use the borax any where you have kids or pets.
The dawn smeared out is invisible, but such a thin spread, I would not worry over that. You can not tell it is even there, but if I were concerned over it, I would just use a damp cloth to wipe the table or counter off before I started cooking.
I learned this on my own, but it does work exceeding well.

We've had a productive week...Our Easter was wonderful, with a nice church service, a big lunch at home and then....Work! Ha! My cabinets were coming off the wall, so I had to clean everything out of them (that took all afternoon) then hubby braced them, glued them and then I couldn't do anything until this morning...So, today has been very busy too! ;)

DeleteEnjoyed reading your post this afternoon. So many wonderful things going on at your home. I like the link that you provided for the dish scrubbies. That's a perfect size (rather than big dish cloths). I clicked on the link for the 1943 lunch recipes. The deviled egg sandwiches actually sound really good. The egg and celery sandwiches were something my mom made (along with some radishes for color and onions for some kick).
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting you mentioned ants. We had the same problem here over the weekend. Not sure if it had to do with my daughter making sugar panoramic eggs or what. At any rate, we use the Terro ant bait that is enclosed so other animals (e.g., cats, dogs) can't get into it and consume the poison. It took care of the ants (for the most part) within a day which was great. Terro is available at stores like Wal-Mart or Target.
