A Simple, Practical Bridal Shower Gift with Tutorial

Brides are showered with many lovely things in the weeks leading up to their weddings.  I enjoy seeing the beautiful gifts and seeing the bride's face light up in appreciation.  Having lived through some very hard times, I tend to be practical in my gifts.  While they don't always get the oohs and aahs that pretties get, they are appreciated and useful.

For a simple yet helpful bridal shower gift, I crocheted a stack of dishcloths for my friend and included a large bottle of dish soap. She knows I care, because of the time I put into making the cloths. I know she has something she can really use and maybe enjoy, too. ~smile~

To crochet simple dishcloths:  Chain 21 then single crochet in the second chain.  Single crochet to end of row. *Chain one and turn.  Single crochet in the first stitch and continue to the end of the row.  Repeat from * until you have a square cloth.  It's 18 rows with my stitch tension.  Simple, but useful.  I use dishcloth cotton. I make lots of dishcloths.  We wash a lot of dishes. ~smile~

  1. I love the idea of giving practical gifts. Especially ones you make yourself. The last bridal shower I attended I gave a cloth shopping bag I had made filled with bags of flour, sugar and containers of salt and pepper. Love your dishcloths and thanks for the directions.

  4. I love the idea of practical gifts too. Once at a shower a bride to be received a bucket filled with cleaning supplies (all fancied up with a bow of course) and while not as exciting, I thought it was such a great idea. Love your dishcloths, I have a friend who has made me some that I still use.

  11. Oh, Laura, I just love making cotton dishcloths! I take my bag with me whenever I go to an appointment or have to wait to pick someone up because they are so quick and easy to make. I make up a lot so that I can give them out as gifts whenever I choose. I love this simple pattern of yours... I make one very similar...except that I alternate working in the front of the stitch on the first row and then the back of the stitch on the second row and repeat. It makes a sort of seed stitch...
Have a wonderful week... and thank you for stopping by for a visit!
    Sweet blessings,
    Laura

  13. These are lovely Laura! I really like them as a gift for a bride too. Sadly I still have not mastered crochet, but when I do, dishcloths are certainly something I would like to make :-)

  16. I've made some dish cloths out of cotton. Mine stretch so when they get wet. Maybe my tension is too loose. What ply yarn and size hook do you use?
