On My Needles... What I'm Reading August 7, 2019

Hello, we are having the most beautiful day here at the edge of the Ozarks listening to the rumbly grumbly sounds of a thunder shower. It is not a storm that makes you fearful, just gentle rain. The air has turned cool. It was lovely to take a break and enjoy reading on the porch.

My daughter made cucumber cookies of all things. We've had lots and lots of cucumbers come out of our garden this year. Amy is quite the gardener. We are really enjoying the fruits of her labor.

My two daughters have had friends in and out today to visit. My brother-in-law is also here visiting us. I love having people here.

A few weeks ago, I showed you the toes of a pair of socks that I have been knitting for myself. Well last night, at knitting group, I was able to complete the foot part, and now I am doing the heel of the first sock. I'm using a method that is new to me. It's called Fish Lips Kiss. Crazy name I know. It's become quite popular over the last few years though. It seems to be pretty easy. I'm halfway done. I'll let you know when I get it finished. I'm actually knitting two at a time. That's why my knitting looks kind of funny on my needles.

I've been listening to Slightly Bad Girls of the Bible by Liz Curtis Higgs. I'm also reading Mother Culture by Karen Andreola and It's Not Supposed to Be This Way by Lysa Terkeurst. I didn't realize it, but she was fighting breast cancer at the same time I was.

Well, I just wanted to drop in and let you know what's on my needles and what I've been reading. I hope you have a beautiful day whether it's raining or sunny hot or cold.

By the way, I'm listening to Slightly Bad Girls of the Bible  by Liz Curtis Higgs for free on Scribd. That makes for thrifty reading.

Have a handmade, thrifty week!

  1. It's thunderstorms here too with rain. It seems everytime we water our tomatoes and green beans we get thunderstorms. But then again it is monsoon season here so it's to be expected. I like the colors of your socks. I've gotten a few more granny squares crocheted but I think I want to start another project. I gave the baby booties to a mom at her baby shower before I had a chance to take a picture.
Anyway, I'm trying to decide what I want to have on my hook. Actually come to think of it, I should crochet some mittens. Our craft group is going to make children's mittens for one of schools here in town. With that being said, I'm off to grab a hook. Happy yarning!

    1. Mittens are a terrific idea. My mum works at a children's clothes ministry. Last Christmas she didn't want a gift, so I gave her a pile of baby hats. I'm getting started on this year's hats.

  3. Its always good to hear from you. Thank you for the last comment about my son in law. He is using the magic mouthwash and yesterday they gave him another one without the lidocain to help him with his tastebuds. He is very nauseous with only one more week of radiation and chemo left, then surgery. Thank you for yor wonderful prayer, I am repeating it daily. ~jackie

  4. Laura,

Your socks are looking beautiful! I love the variegated yarn you are using. The colors are soft and pretty. Hmmm... cucumber cookies sound interesting. How did they taste? We have had a great harvest of cucumbers too. Last week I made pickles and I hope to make dill relish within the next few days. Thankfully my daughter loves cucumbers and can eat one or two pickling sized cucumbers every night with her dinner. : )

  6. Cute socks! On my sewing machine needles are a pile of cloth napkins to be hemmed. These are replacements for our everyday ones. I am reading Emily of New Moon on my Kindle. It was an Amazon freebie a few weeks back. Have a good week!

  8. I *love* the colors of the socks! I do not not knit well, but if I did, I would have an entire drawer dedicated to hand-knit socks! I'm more into crochet and mittens sound like a great next-make project! Very interested in the cookie recipe--we definitely have an over abundance of cucumbers each year...but it's so nice to share veggies, too! Enjoy your week!!
