Hi Everyone!
I'm time traveling through my memories. It started as a bit of stream of consciousness writing during a time when I had writer's block. That's been a bit of what July's been like for me this year. So, here are a few of my memories. What do YOU remember about 1985?
Remembrances of 1985:
- My high school sweetheart, Lowell, proposed to me May 10, 1985. We were driving home from college in Edmund, Oklahoma to our home town of Topeka, Kansas. We stopped to picnic at a roadside rest area on I-35 somewhere in northern Oklahoma. I remember we were sitting at one of the tables with odd cement teepee poles over it. Suddenly, he cried, "Look! A wolf!" While I was looking over the prairie in the distance, he got down on one knee. When I turned back, he asked me to marry him. Of course, I said yes. I was beyond twitterpated!
- I spent the rest of the year saving money and planning my wedding. We were married the next May.
- I was so busy with Lowell, work, finishing college, and planning the wedding, I cannot remember much else. ~smile~
- Ronald Reagan was president.
- The big movie was "Back to the Future".
- Madonna, Cindi Lauper, and Michael Jackson were on the radio and MTV. Who knew what that would become?
- I worked at Sears in the jewelry, make-up, and lingerie departments.
- I was in my senior year studying teaching and English. That fall I took five literature classes. I cannot believe I survived it. Maybe that's why I cannot remember anything else!
So, jog my memory!
What do YOU remember about 1986? I'll bet some of you weren't even born yet! ~smile~

In 1985 I had a 5 year old and a 2 year old! I was 25 years old and married for 7 years already! I don't remember much else though.

What a lovely and heartwarming story, Laura. To be honest nothing in 1986 stands out for me.
ReplyDeleteMy twin girls were born in March of 1995..we already had a 3 1/2 year old son and then the girls! What wonderful memories - busy yes but wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI loved reading about how your husband asked you to marry him. What a sweetheart :)
ReplyDeleteJust off the tip of my brain all that I can remember is that I turned 40. I worried about that number thinking it was the beginning of old age, LOL. This year I'll be turning 80 and my perspective has done a complete about face. I'm turning 80 and I'm still a young women :)
Thank you for the sweet prayer you added to the comment you left on my last post.
I have never heard the term twitterpated before, but I love it!
ReplyDeleteIn 1985 I graduated from college, alongside my future husband.
I got a job as a trainee manager in a building society. I was earning really good money, but I hated it. The men there resented that I was doing 'a man's job' and the women resented that I was on more money than them but was only just learning the ropes. I resigned and burst into tears when I told my parents. Their reaction? "Oh, is that all? We thought you were going to say that you were pregnant. We've all jacked in jobs we didn't like. Don't worry about it!"
I couldn't get another job where I was living so I moved to the North of England and moved in with my boyfriend's family and the rest is history...
Oh my goodness, what a sweet proposal story! That's just adorable. Sounds like 1985 was a whirlwind for you with Lowell, college, and wedding planning – totally understandable why other memories might be fuzzy! And yes, Back to the Future was iconic.

How absolutely sweet that Lowell proposed to you in 1985! That "Look! A wolf!" trick is classic and so romantic. No wonder you can't remember much else from that year, you were planning a wedding and finishing college – what a time!

Thank you for your wonderful memories. This (1985) was a rough year for me. My house was destroyed in a tornado, I lost my grandpa, and my cat and my hamster passed too. I struggled with PTSD for most of the year and spent about 3 months bouncing from one house to another before we secured semp permenant housing. BUT I saw my community come together and found out who really loved me.
ReplyDeleteWow! 1985 was a great year! We got married on 9/14/1985! We will celebrate 40 years! I spent most of the year planning the wedding. Still love the 80s music! 1986 was a good year too. Getting used to being married, planning our future and working our buts off. Thanks for taking us down memory lane. 💖
