We use Teaching Textbooks Algebra for my 10th grade daughter. Why? Because I know that math is hard for me. And because the teacher on the computer cd explains every single problem. Emily came upon a type of problem last week that she just couldn't get. I had no idea how to set up an equation to get the answer. So...
I sat down beside her and picked up a pencil.
We watched the teacher do each step of the problem. Then we each did it ourselves, too. I'd say, "I got xxxxx on this line. What did you get?" Then we'd watch and see what the guy on TT did. Then we'd do another problem and try to

Happy to be Momma
to terrific kids.
*I'm not affiliated with Teaching Textbooks at all. I just am so thankful to have found it. All three of my kids use it. Oh, one more thing.... We use only the CDs.

Good Morning Mondays
I could not do algebra in the 10th grade or since, but I'm glad you got it worked out with her, good for you both!
ReplyDeleteHi Annie,
ReplyDeleteWhen she asked why she needs Algebra, I told her, "I don't know, but you need it to graduate and for college!" I'll be by for a visit to Scrappalachia soon!
Blessings,
Laura
Hi Laura a really interesting post as it took me back to my old days at schools doing algebra - for some reason I loved it but don't think I would remember any of it now! Big hugs to you and your lovely family Laura

I was fortunate, because my husband is a chemist with minors in both mathematics and physics. He tutored not only our children but all the neighborhood children also. Funny thing is, I was quite good at math and even really enjoyed geometry, but now find it hard to do just simple additions and multiplications. Guess if you don't use it, you lose it. Maybe I need to look into your teaching tools and reacquaint myself with it. Thanks for stopping by my blog!
ReplyDeleteWhen it comes to math, I guess it is true if you don't use it, you lose it. Glad you found a solution!
ReplyDeleteBack in the 1980's when math teachers "migrated" to teaching computer technology, English teachers (like me) had to teach math. I loved playing with numbers, but words are still my love. I would have trouble teaching science. Linda@Wetcreek Blog
ReplyDeleteAfter years of using Alpha Omega workbooks...that I love for the younger grades, we switched to TT towards the end of last year for my son, also now in 10th grade. Like you we do it together when needed. I like the way it's set up for reviewing past lessons.
ReplyDeleteenjoy your day!
Hi Maria,
ReplyDeleteI'm just glad I found it before I had to struggle through a textbook with her! I'll be over to visit at 5 Simple Things in just a bit.
Blessings,
Laura

Hi Jane,
ReplyDeleteI was an English major in college. I still have to use the book with grammar. You forget that, too. I'll pop over to Hope and Thrift in just a bit.
Blessings,
Laura
We use TT also. I love it that the computer guy never loses his patience. ;) He makes it gentle and low-stress.
ReplyDeleteI found your blog over at Growing Home in the blog hop. I look forward to looking through your blog a bit more. Blessings!

Hi Tonya,
ReplyDeleteI wish I knew the TT guy's name. He's so much more patient than I could ever be with math. I'm coming for a visit.
Laura
Hi Dorothy,
ReplyDeleteI've forgotten so much. I am helping her the best I can. This is why we bought Teaching Textbooks.
Blessings,
Laura
I'm so glad I teach English! Thanks for sharing & for visiting me at Doorkeeper. Blessings!
ReplyDeleteYou made me smile Renee.
ReplyDeleteHave a great week.
Laura
Hi Laura! I just ran across your blog. My son is in 10th grade and we use TT as well. It has been a lifesaver for us. We are NOT math people in our house!
ReplyDeleteI'd love for you to stop by my blog. I enjoy "meeting" fellow homeschoolers!
I had tried several maths before finding this one. I too was so thankful. It helped both the kids and I to learn it easier than any other math.
ReplyDeleteHi Sandra,
ReplyDeleteWe're near the end of the level, I'm probably going to have to help my daughter a bit, but it's the best I could find.
Blessings,
Laura
Thanks for sharing this! I was getting nervous about going into algebra because I think I have forgotten everything! I will definitely look into this!! I am sure other readers of the Art of Home-Making Monday will appreciate this information :)
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome, Jes. I wasn't sure if it was a good one to share, but I knew that it's been an answer to prayer for me.
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Laura
Algebra is hard! Thank goodness my engineer hubby is really good at it! Growing up I helped the kids with spelling, reading, and anything artsy. The math was left to him! lol! I'm fine till it gets beyond fractions. When my hubby was activated for Desert Storm I had to take my teens to my father in law if they needed Algebra help. We didn't have all the computer help they have now days. Thanks for sharing with SYC.
