Sewing Masks Like So Many of You

Hello ladies!

I've been spending my free time much like many of you— sewing masks. I began my sewing for the Covid Crisis by sewing tinkle wipes. I cut up old t-shirts and sewed 2 layers together. This reduced our tp usage, so we never actually ran out. Then I turned my attention to masks as I became aware of the need. By that point, I was unable to buy elastic. I had a card from the '60's or '70's that had some thin elastic cord on it. I don't know who gave it to me, but it had been in my sewing box for ages. I used that up making just a few masks. I also made some masks using clothesline. Finally, I turned to crocheting ties with dishcloth cotton. It works.

My daughters and I contributed thread, fabric, jewelry making wire, and yarn from our stashes. It's actually been a great way to clear some clutter while making something helpful.

A couple of nights ago, my little dog was begging to get on my lap because it was storming. I actually have put a little bed on the edge of my table for her to sleep in while I sew, because she likes to be right next to me. When we had that first crack of thunder, she had to be held. Each time she heard more thunder, she crawled highter until she was on my shoulder. ~smile~ Ah fur babies!

Well, I've finished the masks for now. Hopefully for good. I did talk to my dad tonight and found he needs some, too. So, I'll go through the ones I have and send him some. Well ladies, it's time for me to spend a bit of time with the family.

 Have a terrific week.
Laura

P.S. Please write back!

  2. Good for you in making masks. Our area seems to be doing well with them for right now. Thank you for the advice about using the fabric as the liner. I was planning to do that when a fellow blogger was sweet enough to offer some she had excess in her stash. I really have found my blogging sisters to be the most generous people. :-)
May God bless your day Laura and I'm so glad we've found each others blogs.
    Blessings,
    Betsy

  3. Just sorted out the fabric and found some elastic languishing in the bottom of my sewing box. So that is the next task, making face masks.

    1. That's wonderful Mama!I think that one good thing about this is that it's decluttering a lot of ladies' sewing rooms! Plus there will be little scraps for the quilters and rug makers!
      Be blessed,

  4. Good morning,
Aww your sweet puppy was looking for comfort, but he does look to be in a silly spot.
Our dog doesn’t get too upset about storms but many dogs do.
Bless you for sewing masks, did you ever think we’d all be wearing masks? I sure didn’t.

Hope you have a wonderful week

    1. I don't think anyone could ever have imagined we'd need masks like this. I remember when I was younger and reading about plagues and such if it could happen again. Well....Be blessed dearie, thanks so much for writing to me.Laura

  5. Good for you! I keep thinking I'm going to sew masks but still haven't gotten to it. We got Michael's graduation done yesterday and this week I'm decluttering...maybe next week! By the time I get to them, we won't need them anymore! ha!

    1. I do hope we don't need them soon, but it seems that instead, more people I know are wanting them. I may end up making more. I don't know. I just looked back at my sewing record and I've made nothing but tinkle wipes and masks for seven weeks. I need to make something else before I return to masks. ~smile~
I don't want to burn out.
      Blessings,
      Laura

    1. I did find elastic on Etsy, but I am using up my current resources right now. I figure that crocheted ties will work, too. After all, mine aren't going to medical facilities.
      God bless you,
      Laura

    1. That's excellent Regina! It's nice that the project has so many styles that anyone can choose a type they can make regardless of their skill level.
      ~smile~ I'm happy for you.

    1. Me too Regina. I call her Miss Singer and like to tell her good morning when I turn her on, because she makes a sound when I turn her on. It is just a little fun for me. Find joy wherever you go!
Are you doing any sewing lately?

  9. I've not made any tinkle wipes, although I had mentioned the idea to several who were in need of TP. Thankfully we had a large stash with no issues. I made masks for my neighbor who is a nurse, and her nursing staff until they let me know they now had plenty. It was a good feeling to use up my stash, for sure! And now I keep a mask in my purse just in case I may need it, but so far, I've hardly worn it. Many blessings to you!

    1. Many blessings to you as well Marilyn. I actually have found that I like to use the tinkle wipes. We have tp for other needs. Wink. I love that we are using so much less tp. With two adult daughters at home (in college), my husband and I, we use quite a bit of tp. ~smile~ This has cut our usage by more than half, and they are easy to throw in with a load of towels. I thought they would smell, but we have them in an open bucket in each bathroom lined with a plastic bag. I wash them every day or two, and no smell. Oh, and my husband doesn't use them at all. They aren't for that kind of thing. ~grin~Be blessed,Laura
