A Thrifty Week at Harvest Lane Cottage #105

Welcome to another thrifty week at Harvest Lane Cottage. I'm so glad you've found me! Each week I share my thrifty and frugal projects, ways of saving money, and my blessings from God.

A Thrifty Week at Harvest Lane Cottage

Dear Reader,

Hello ladies! Summer is in full swing now. Our little garden that my husband planted in five gallon buckets is growing beautifully! It's so much easier for him than weeding, too. Can't wait for my first summery bite of fresh homegrown tomato!

I want to remind you that summertime is the perfect time to watch sales to prepare for gift giving. You can purchase fruit to make jams and jellies, take advantage of the Fourth of July clearance sales, watch for new and next to new items at garage sales—all with thoughts toward Christmas and other gift giving occasions. Think ahead mama! Even with the tiniest of budgets, you can make things nice for your family if you start early.

This week's miracle:   I received the explanation of benefits from our medical insurer for the first chemo treatment. One treatment was $45,000! Thank you God, the bill was paid with write-offs and by the insurance company, because our co-insurance and deductible were already met. Thank you Jesus! If you remember, we didn't have medical insurance until March 1st, I found the lump on April 22nd, and began the chemotherapy on May 23rd.

God's ways are higher than our ways!

I didn't feel well, so I really didn't do much for the last week or so. I thank you all so much for praying for me. I've had an easier time after chemo this time.

There are going to be times in our lives when we are not able to do as much, but if we do our best when we are able, we will have habits that will carry us through hard times.

A Verse for You

"And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus."
Philippians 4:19

I think Philippians 4 is one of my absolute favorite chapters.

Here's my thrifty week!

  • Gifts and surprises! Thank you Judy and Susan!
  • I'm reading a free Kindle book by Grace Livingston Hill. It is called The Enchanted BarnSo far I love it!
  • I was notified that I've been accepted to receive a free review copy of The Legacy. It's the final book in the Secrets of the Shetlands series. I loved the first two books.
  • A whole box of books from my friend Sarah! Thank you!
  • Yard sale score. My husband took me saling and asked what I was looking for. I told him only taper candles. I just love tapers! Guess what? That's the one thing that we found! So I can enjoy a flickering flame anytime!
  • My friend brought us a delicious meatloaf dinner. Thank you Kathy!
  • I stayed home a lot, therefore I used less gas.
  • I watched Is Genesis History? on DVD. It was awesome. Watch for a review soon. It was free for review.
That's my thrifty week.

What are you doing in your home this week?

  2. I always love reading your Thrifty Week posts. So inspiring and joyful!
You continue to be in my prayers. I know chemo isn't a walk in the park. I thank God for His provision for you regarding your medical bills.
Since my husband has been sick, we've noticed how much money we've saved on gas and some other things too. We just don't go many places right now!

    1. Hi Mary Ann,

Initially we spent a lot more on gas since I had to go to the next town so often for tests and such. It's slowed down a lot, because I've slowed down a lot. It's been almost two weeks, and I'm finally feeling more normal. The side effects are still there, but not controlling me as much. ~wink~

Father God, I pray for your healing power to flow through Mary Ann's husband. Father, please heal all that is not right in his body from the top of his head to the souls of his feet. I ask it all in Jesus' Name. Amen.

God bless you both Mary Ann!

  3. Looks like a good week, all except that chemo statement! Oh my goodness, I had no idea chemo would be that expensive. I am glad you have your insurance in place and yes, God was and is there all the time! My first tomato is ripening on the windowsill now, hopefully will have my first tomato sandwich this week. We fried green tomatoes Friday night with our supper. I hope you are feeling well.

    1. Oh I adore homegrown tomato sandwiches! I remember when I was a teen, we moved to a house in the country. We planted a big garden and had an overabundance of tomatoes. We ate tomato sandwiches often for meals. Yum. I have never tried fried green tomatoes. I don't know if we'll have enough to try that this year or not. We shall see. Enjoy that sandwich!
      Blessings,
      Laura

    1. Always Michelle! I wore the beautiful prayer shawl you made for me to church. I became too tired in service, so I slipped off to the prayer room sofa, took off my hat, and covered my head with the shawl and prayed!
      Thanks again so much!

  8. Your friend, Kathy, sounds lovely. I haven't had meatloaf in years, but I do remember that I absolutely loved it, especially the leftovers used in meatloaf sandwiches--Yum !

  10. I'm so happy to hear that someone made you a prayer shawl. We have that ministry at our church and it's been such a blessing to so many people! Someone made one for my mom after her stroke. I thought of praying over it and passing it on, but I just can't!

I was excited to see that we've saved almost $25 in change since January. It doesn't look like that much!

I found some real estate in my home this weekend, too! 3 empty shoe boxes were in a closet. All this time I thought there was something in them! Out to recycling they went. I also cleared out some old clothes that my hubs wasn't wearing anymore. Those aren't worth sending as a donation so they'll become rags.

I discovered the salad boxes at Sam's are a great size to store fabric in and they're see-thru' for easy finding. So, I'm sorting fabric by color and they'll stack easily in the closet. That'll be so much easier than digging thru' a drawer.

Now I want meatloaf and mashed potatoes!!!!

      I want meatloaf again! ~smile~
      Be blessed!
